Colour Photography Digital Photography 4032 x 2268 Original Piece I moved to Toronto as an international student in the first week of September, 2022. The first month was difficult for me especially housing. After spending a whole month as a paying guest, in the first week of October I moved into a basement that place was a wreck. Nonetheless, I was happy to call that little claustrophobic space my home. By the end of October I got used to the daily grind and have developed myself a routine and stuck to it. Visiting the nearby park was one of the major outings I'd look forward to every evening, especially during the sunsets. Moving to a different country, leaving behind thirty years of my life, my family and friends back in my home country to chase my dreams came with hint of loneliness, agony, pain and a lot of hope. The picture I've submitted for this competition is a self portrait during my first visit to the park on the Thirtieth Street, on a bright sunny day. It was around 5 in the evening I shot that picture which kinda tells what I was going through metaphorically. For me that picture talks about me trying to hide my face in a new country while trying to belong/adapt to the new environment. The shadow of me represents my presence without a face surrounded by the newness that I'm still trying to adapt to. One of the episodes was about baby turtles and how they hatch from the egg and run to the ocean. I felt so sad because most of them get eaten by other animals, and with strong waves, they would be taken away. It was like their lives were at risk all the time. I am an over-thinker and competitive person; i am always overthinking about situations that no matter how big or small the situations are. Sometimes, overthinking really gives me a lot of anxiety in society, it does affect my communication, my listening and my expression. It’s very unorganized in my head which fill up with crazy ideas and unnecessary thoughts. Because all of that, i asked myself:” will people judge me the way i always am ?”. The questions i asked myself really hold me down and i feel stuck. After going to Humber, i have met a lot of talented people and amazing teachers that they don’t afraid to express themselves in art. In laymans terms, patience may be obtained by practicing restraint and being more pro-active than re-active, by persevering, but in more humane terms, can patience really be achieved?
The uncanny resemblance between an always on the go human, and a fleeting butterfly, puts the idea of "patience" into perspective. The families residing near the banks were facing a lot of problems as their homes were filled with water. They were starving of food, shelter and medication but still no support was provided by the local politicians or administrators.
