Black Academic Success and Engagement (BASE) equity hub within the department of student success and engagement at Humber College. BASE seeks to provide students who identify as Black, African, Caribbean or African Canada with community, resources and support to help them fully maximize on their college experience.
The goal of the BASE is to create a holistic environment, for academic, social and professional development, and civic engagement for all members of the Humber Community.
Our programs assist with the following areas: Academic Support, Leadership, Personal and Professional Development and On and Off Campus Engagement.
BASE Student Lead
After enrolling in January 2018 , I made it a priority to submerge myself in the Humber community at the Lakeshore campus. I am in the Bachelor of Commerce Accounting program in the process of obtaining my CPA designation. In my spare time, I enjoy compiling music playlists, play Sudoku comptetitively, go on hikes and adventures around the city.
Special Projects & Events Assistant
Hailing from the beautiful island of Jamaica, Opal Nelly Nelson, a 3rd-year student, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Finance. Fueled by her passion to help others and make a difference, Nelly presently holds the post of Special Program and Events Assistant for The BASE program at the Lakeshore Campus. She enjoys bathroom karaoke, socializing with friends, nature walks, brushing up on her sign language skills, reading, learning new languages and listening to alternative rock and country music.
Marketing & Communications Assistant
Devon is a driven, results-oriented and self-motivated person who is embracing of challenges and change. With those traits, he has proven himself a strategic and innovative leader. Devon's commercial background inspired him to atten Humber. As an international student, Devon has distinguished himself through his engagement within the Humber community by winning the Launch Competition, being an Orientation Leader, a First Year Experience Mentor and now, the Marketing Assistant for the BASE at the North Campus.
Michallia Marks is a student in the Digital Business Management program. She describes herself as an optimist, a visionary thinker, and storyteller, who immerses herself in books and writing, which are two of her hobbies. She is passionate about theater, travelling, leadership, and personal development. Her goal is to pursue a career as a Project Manager in the I.T./Digital Marketing field.
Kareem is a student in the Financial Services program, Kareem has dreams of becoming accomplished and successful in the global financial industry. He is Nigerian, and he wears his culture and heritage on his sleeve. He loves meeting new people and having conversations. Kareem loves to laugh and he is passionate about sports, music, family, travel, nature and life in general.
