Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
(SoTL)

The Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) is applying a systematic framework to investigate the effectiveness of teaching and learning practices.

SoTL has three primary goals: (1) to improve our knowledge of student learning and effective teaching practices; (2) to encourage the professional development of our scholarly capabilities; and (3) the public dissemination of SoTL work to make continuing contributions to the field.

SoTL encompasses a range of inquiry and can occur at multiple levels. The 4M Framework is commonly used to demonstrate the various levels in which SoTL can impact: micro, meso, macro and mega (Friberg 2016; Simmons, 2020).

Teaching and learning go hand-in-hand

A diagram illustrating the cyclical relationship between teaching and learning. Two circular arrows connect the concepts, with the word 'Teaching' in a purple circle on the left and 'Learning' in a peach circle on the right.
This diagram highlights the cyclical nature of teaching and learning, showcasing how both processes are interconnected and continuously influence each other. The word “Teaching” is placed inside a purple circle with an arrow extending toward the word “Learning,” which is inside a peach circle. The arrows illustrate the flow and feedback loop between these two concepts, ideal for use in educational contexts or presentations.
