Accessible Learning Services Best Practice Considerations - Student Responsibilities in the Accommodation Process

Enhancing Institutional EDI Knowledge of Disability and Academic Accessibility:

  • ALS’s Best Practice Considerations through the Communiqué this semester have focused on equipping faculty to better support their students with disabilities. An important part of our role in ALS is to empower students to take an active role in the accommodation process.

  • For example, students with disabilities registered with ALS are responsible for renewing their Accommodation Letter each semester and contacting faculty to request accommodations in advance of a test or assignment deadline.

  • In addition, students are expected to follow guidelines around requesting assignment extensions, taking a reduced course load, using a memory aid and other accommodations.

  • We encourage faculty to be engaged in constructive conversations around accommodations with your students.
