The climate crisis is one of the most significant challenges of our time, and an important priority for the entire Humber community, as sustainability is one of the college’s core values.

We expect that some members of our community will choose to participate in the student-led global climate strike on September 27. It is inspiring to see so many students use the power of their collective voice to raise awareness about climate change.

While we recognize the critical importance of the need to tackle climate change, the college will maintain regular academic and administrative activities on September 27.

We encourage students who plan to participate in this action to discuss it with their instructors to determine whether arrangements can be made to receive missed course content or to make-up missed exams, tests, quizzes, or other assignments. Students should be familiar with their program requirements and the guidance that may be provided in their course outlines.

As always, if staff wish to participate in this event in any way, existing processes for taking time off would apply.

The climate crisis is a critical issue that can be addressed in several ways. Humber acknowledges that institutions must lead in addressing the climate crisis through various sustainability initiatives. We will soon launch our new Sustainability Plan 2019-2024 that will direct the institution towards national leadership in developing sustainable campuses.

From recent projects such as our North Campus NX building retrofit that was the first in Canada to achieve a Zero Carbon Building Design certification and now uses 70 per cent less energy than before (making it one of the most energy efficient in North America) to becoming a Fairtrade Designated Campus that supports fair wages and good living conditions for farmers and workers, we are committed to sustainability across the college. To learn more about Humber’s sustainability actions, visit humber.ca/sustainability.
