Copyright Tip: Balancing Rights

When a work is created two legal rights are automatically given to the creator - moral rights and economic rights.

Moral rights protect the integrity of a work and the reputation of its creator. Economic rights include the exclusive right to reproduce an entire work or any substantial part of the work.

Canadian copyright law is a balance between these creator's rights and users' rights, such as Fair Dealing. If your use of a work exceeds the Fair Dealing limits and does not qualify for any other user exception, then you must receive permission from the creator. This permission may require a payment of copyright royalties.
