Humber Statement on Electronic Monitoring

Dear Humber employees,

Over the last few weeks, members of Humber’s executive team and Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness have received questions about new rules for employers regarding electronic monitoring of employees under Ontario’s Working for Workers Act (Bill 88), which amends the Employment Standards Act and came into effect last spring.

Ontario Colleges, including Humber, are considered crown agencies and are not subject to certain provisions of the Employment Standards Act, including the new Electronic Monitoring provisions.

Humber supports a healthy and respectful work environment, which includes the protection of privacy. Humber does not use software or systems that are specifically designed for employee monitoring or surveillance. We do, however, monitor all Humber digital services to ensure services are operating and are safe and secure. This includes ensuring network security, diagnostic integrity, systems audits, and compliance with the college’s Acceptable Use Policy for Digital Services.

Our Acceptable Use Policy for Digital Services outlines our approach to monitoring digital services. Please see section 7 – Humber Access, and section 8 – Electronic Monitoring for more information.

We have also recently launched The Digital Campus of Tomorrow 2023-2026. Two of the guiding principles of the plan are digital ethics and privacy and safety and security. I encourage you to read the plan and visit our digital campus website to learn more about Humber’s digital campus experience and our approach to maintaining the safety and security of the college’s online community.

Thank you for your collective commitment to a robust digital campus experience. We will continue to share information with the Humber community as we introduce new services.

Please reach out to me directly by email at scott.briggs@humber.ca if you have any questions.
