Reminder: Humber Has Low-Waste Event Spaces

Low-Waste Event Spaces are a partnership between the Office of Sustainability, Campus Services, and Chartwells. They aim to reduce waste output across campus and align our operations with the federal government’s Single Use Plastics Prohibition Regulation coming into force in late 2023.

Humber disposes over 840 metric tons of waste per year (that's close to 61 pounds per person). A recent waste audit of North and Lakeshore campuses found that the vast majority our recycling is going to landfill, due to improper sorting and high contamination. Reducing our waste is the best way we can improve the situation. Eliminating the use of disposable items through initiatives like Low Waste Event Spaces is imperative to Humber’s climate action.

Humber currently has three designated Low-Waste Event Spaces. These spaces are:

  • North Campus’ Barrett CTI
  • Lakeshore Campus’ G Building
  • Lakeshore Campus’ Student Welcome and Resource Centre

When ordering catering for the designated Low-Waste Event Spaces, china service will be the default at no additional cost. This means that absolutely no disposable plates, glasses, or cutlery will be available in these spaces. All event attendees are highly encouraged to bring their own reusable containers to take away leftover food.

Humber aims to transition all campus spaces to low waste catering in the future.
