As members of the Humber community may be aware, the University of Guelph and Humber College have been in discussions with the City of Brampton about the potential relocation of the University of Guelph-Humber to the city’s planned Centre for Innovation.
Earlier today, we, along with University of Guelph, informed City Council of the decision to withdraw from those discussions. Please see below for more information.
Please contact andrew.leopold@humber.ca if there are any specific questions.
To the Humber Community,
Earlier today, the University of Guelph and Humber College informed the City of Brampton of our decision to withdraw from discussions regarding the proposed relocation of the University of Guelph-Humber (UofGH) to Brampton’s planned Centre for Innovation (CFI).
The University of Guelph, Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber will now use this opportunity to continue planning the growth and evolution of Guelph-Humber. Over the coming months we will build on Guelph-Humber's reputation of academic excellence and focus on the student experience, student success, academic quality, and the delivery of programs that meet the needs of the community.
In June 2021, Brampton City Council unanimously supported a motion to have City staff work with the University of Guelph and Humber College on University of Guelph-Humbers’s possible relocation. Shortly thereafter, we began foundational conversations with City staff. These discussions included detailed space analysis and refined requirements for instructional and study spaces. It became apparent that space constraints were a concern, notably that the CFI would not be able to meet University of Guelph-Humber’s current and future needs.
In recent months, attempts to find additional space to deliver a high-quality student experience that meet the standards of Guelph-Humber and its parent institutions have been unsuccessful.
Further, both the timing of the construction, and potential opening, of the planned CFI have yet to be confirmed. Timing is critical for Guelph-Humber, as it enters a new recruitment cycle. Current students and prospects who are considering attending the university in the fall, as well as employees, must have certainty about where they will study and work in the coming years.
We thank Mayor Brown, Council and City staff for their interest in the University of Guelph-Humber. We remain deeply appreciative of our strong ties to Brampton, including students and employees who live in the city, and welcome the opportunity to explore future partnerships with Brampton and the city’s business community.
We will provide updates to the Humber community as we work together on the growth and evolution of the University of Guelph-Humber.
