The Centre for Teaching & Learning is pleased to announce a final call for applications for the Teaching Innovation Fund.

About the fund: The fund includes $1,400 per investigator and support in developing and conducting a research project about teaching and learning. There are typically two types of projects: “Build” projects, in which you develop and build a new, evidence-based teaching tool or approach, and “Impact” projects, in which you measure the impact of an innovative teaching tool or approach with your students.

Please join in offering warm wishes to Maggie Hobbs, who is retiring from Humber College after 40 years of service and dedication. Maggie started working at Humber in 1979 with the Student Government, managing the student pub where she increased daily revenues by 32 times over a seven-year span.

In 1985, Maggie began working for the Council of Student Affairs as Director of Operations, a role that saw her directly supporting the Student Government for 13 years. Over the next 11 years, she directed the College’s awards, alumni and orientation activities and began to establish what has become her signature of highly organized, professional, large scale events.

In 2009, and for the last 10 years, Maggie has perfected that signature supporting events in Student Success and Engagement, Planning and executing award/scholarship ceremonies, and supporting various units on campus with large scale events such as the President’s Breakfast and Convocation. During this time, she has also played an integral role in the practical experience of countless students in the Public Relations certificate program as an advisor during their fall and winter term event management projects.

Beyond the 40-plus incredible years of accomplishments, service, and commitment, Maggie is known as an honest communicator, a key contributor, a living archive of knowledge about Humber, a caring colleague, and an exceptional creator. Her attention to detail ensured that a stole was never twisted, a flower was never out of place, a speaker could be heard, a recipient received an award, and a guest was well fed. Maggie has had an incredible impact on Humber College and a countless number of staff and students who have wandered our halls.

We welcome members of the Humber community to join Maggie and her family in a celebration of her career and contributions on September 23, 2019 in the Humber Room. The reception will begin at 2:30 p.m., with remarks to follow.

Lara Hof is leaving Humber College after eight years of work in the areas of Student Conduct, Student Support, Sexual Violence Education and Prevention, and Residence Life. Lara will be joining Mohawk College as the Associate Director, Student Rights and Responsibilities on September 23, 2019.

During her career at Humber, Lara developed a comprehensive student conduct office built on leading practice and established partnerships and collaborations both inside and outside of the institution. Lara has played an instrumental role in the creation, implementation, and revision of several Humber policies to ensure that students receive a fair process, holistic support, and connection to resources. She also established Humber’s award-winning Consent Peer Education Program, a peer-based program that offers more than 40 events and supports the direct interaction with more than 2,000 students annually. Additionally, Lara’s use of trauma-informed investigation approaches has been critical in supporting effective responses to sexual violence on campus and made her a trusted member of the Student Support and Intervention Team.

Lara is a leader who has always been known as a supportive colleague and has shown incredible dedication to Humber and the students who call Humber their academic home. She has frequently gone above and beyond to ensure that incidents are responded to and students receive the care and outcomes that are fair and, wherever possible, will best support their success. Lara’s last day at Humber will be September 20, 2019. Please join with the Student Success and Engagement Team in wishing Lara all the best on her next adventure.

A farewell celebration will be hosted on September 17, 2019 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in LRC 3058 (North Campus) where cake and light refreshments will be served.

We have some exciting news to share! Student Leadership Programs is thrilled to launch a new program for students to learn, engage and apply their leadership skills. Previously known as the Path 2 Leadership Certificate program our new program “My Leadership Journey” allows students to creatively explore their leadership experiences. Students will choose their own adventure and complete five of the eight pathways on their leadership journey and receive CCR certification upon completion. They will reflect on these experiences by submitting a series of structured reflections which will ultimately act as a leadership e-portfolio.
