The Humber Research Ethics Board (HREB) reviews all research involving human participants that takes place within the Humber community. The HREB’s responsibility is to ensure that all research involving human participants aligns with the standards set by the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS): Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans.

In an April 2018 Humber Communiqué announcement, the HREB placed a call for expressions of interest for new board members and received an overwhelming response. To ensure the HREB equitably represented the Humber community, new members have been selected based on their expertise in a variety of areas.

We are pleased to announce the following new board members:

Dr. Mojgan Rezvani, Faculty – School of Health Sciences
Dr. Jennifer Bazar, Curator, Office of the Principal
Mr. Audel Cunningham, Faculty – The Business School
Dr. Jeffrey Semple, Faculty – School of Health Sciences
Ms. Rita Kohli, External Community Member

New REB Chair appointment:

On behalf of President Chris Whitaker, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Lydia Boyko as the Chair of the Humber REB.

Lydia Boyko is a faculty member in Humber’s School of Media Studies & Information Technology and serves on the Executive Committee of Humber College Council. Dr. Boyko joined Humber full time in 2011 after more than 20 years of business experience in the private sector, with a focus on government and investor relations in the financial services sector, and several years as a partial-load business professor at the postsecondary level. Lydia has been an HREB member since 2014.

Lydia will bring leadership, expertise, and guidance to the HREB when she assumes the role of HREB Chair, effective September 29, 2018. Please join us in congratulating Lydia on her appointment.

As the membership of the Humber Research Ethics Board (HREB) shifts this semester, Jasteena Dhillon will be stepping down from the Humber Research Ethics Board (HREB) where she served for the past six years, two of those years as Chair.

Jasteena Dhillon is a faculty member in the Business School at Humber. Trained as a lawyer, Jasteena came to Humber after completing a human rights fellowship at the Carr Centre for Human Rights in the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and at Harvard Law School. Over the past 20 years, she has worked as legal counsel in the Ontario government; as a legal adviser for the United Nations; and as a human rights officer for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. She was a development expert for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and a humanitarian manager for several international NGOs, which took her to South Africa, Bosnia, Albania, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, South Sudan and Iraq.

In 2016, Jasteena was the first faculty member appointed as Chair, ensuring that the HREB was a faculty driven, peer review body. During Jasteena’s time as Chair, the HREB’s profile has risen within the Humber community. Over the past two years, the HREB has reviewed over 150 applications. Jasteena’s commitment to educating faculty and researchers on the TCPS2 guidelines and advocacy for the importance of research ethics and ethics review has been integral to the success of the HREB. She openly shared information about the HREB’s mandate, role and processes, resulting in an improved understanding of the essential nature of the committee. She played a pivotal role in best practice development and implementation and continually shared new updates from the external research community with other committee members. Additionally, Jasteena wrote and conducted an analysis on the TCPS2 guidelines on consent vs. assent, ethnicity and race, research with children, student led research, working with international participants, and on social justice research.

Jasteena’s term as Chair and as an HREB member will end on September 29, 2018.

On behalf of President Chris Whitaker, I would like to offer Jasteena our sincere gratitude for her dedication and commitment to ensuring that the HREB is a success.

The International Student and Staff/Faculty/Admin Connect Mentoring Program is designed to enhance the experience of new international students at Humber College ITAL. We hope that this will be accomplished by creating an opportunity for faculty, staff, admin and Humber students to be part of a “Welcome Team” that will engage with new international students through informal, personalized and friendly social interactions.

Why?

  1. To improve the social, psychological and academic performance of international students as they transition to life in Canada and at Humber College ITAL.
  2. To enhance the feeling of hospitality on campus for new international students.
  3. To enhance the intercultural experience and cross-cultural knowledge of staff and faculty. Participation in this program will allow faculty, staff and admin to enrich their intercultural perspectives and communication skills while gaining a greater understanding of the goals, motivations and difficulties experienced by international students.

Who can be part of the welcome team?

The project will be open to all interested full and parttime faculty, staff and admin at Humber College ITAL (participation in the program is entirely voluntary).

What is the time commitment?

  1.  Attend at least two (2) Connect Program organized events during each term (e.g. International Games café, Gingerbread Decorating, Holiday Potluck)
  2. Meet with your mentee at least two (2) times outside of any Connect Program organized event during each term.

See attached flyer for dates and times of events

If interested, please contact Dileeni Weerasinghe before September 23, 2018 at dileeni.weerasinghe@humber.ca.

Please be advised that effective Monday, October 1, the Corporate Deposit & Miscellaneous Receipts process will be moving from the Registrar’s Office (North) to Financial Services & Planning – Accounts Receivable (AR). To accommodate the transition, the Registrar’s Office (North) will not be accepting deposits on Friday, September 28.

What does this mean?

  • Cheques related to non-student (i.e. corporate) billings and receivables will be accepted and processed by AR.
  • Miscellaneous receipts will be accepted and processed by AR.
  • In person payments relating to repayment of staff travel advances and personal expenses on p-card will be accepted via debit card and processed by AR.

Note that this change does not impact the processes at the Lakeshore Campus.

We strongly discourage the collection of cash for College events and activities. More information on acceptable methods of payment can be found in the attached document, or on our website.

Questions regarding the Corporate Deposit & Miscellaneous Receipts process can be directed to Kasia Bielska (kasia.bielska@humber.ca) or Accounts Receivable (accounts.receivable@humber.ca).

Please inform your teams, as appropriate. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Employment Equity at Humber College

"It is not that individuals in the designated groups are inherently unable to achieve equality on their own, it is that the obstacles in their way are so formidable and self-perpetuating that they cannot be overcome without intervention. It is both intolerable and insensitive if we simply wait and hope that the barriers will disappear with time. Equality in employment will not happen unless we make it happen." - Judge Rosalie Silberman Abella Royal Commission on Equality in Employment, 1985

Humber College is committed to principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The Employment Equity Act was passed in 1986. Recognizing that "systemic discrimination" was responsible for most of the inequality found in employment, the Abella Royal Commission on Equality in Employment outlined a systemic response and chose the term "Employment Equity" to describe the process.

What is Employment Equity?

Employment Equity is an on-going planning process used by an employer to:

  • identify and eliminate barriers in an organization's employment policies and procedures;
  • put into place positive policies and practices to ensure the effects of systemic barriers are eliminated; and
  • ensure appropriate representation of identified group members throughout their workforce.

What is the goal of Employment Equity?

  • eliminate employment barriers for the designated groups: women, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal people, members of racialized groups. At Humber, we provide persons with the opportunity to identify their sexual and gender identity.
  • remedy past discrimination in employment opportunities and prevent future barriers;
  • improve access and distribution throughout all occupations and at all levels for members of the identified groups; and
  • foster a climate of equity and inclusion in the organization.

Humber College complies voluntarily with the Employment Equity Act under the Federal Contractors Program.

Please visit the Centre website for more information about Humber’s Employment Equity Program.
