In April, the International Centre and the LinX pub hosted our first ever and very successful International Music Night. This gave International Students an opportunity to showcase their amazing talents (most for the first time) here in Canada.

Looking to build on the success of that event, the International Centre will be hosting a series of smaller yet more intimate music events that will continue to showcase the amazing and incredible musical talents and abilities of Humber International Students from all over the globe.

Starting May 26th and continuing on the last Friday of each month over the summer, International Student performers will be playing in the LRC Concourse from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. The main goal of these performances is to not only showcase their own amazing talents but to also add to the already energetic weekend mood for the staff here in the LRC!

If you are looking for more, these performers can be found once again starting in September as we look to build on our initial International Music Night Events!

For more questions or inquiries please contact our International Student Ambassador, rohit.sharma2@humber.ca

We hope that you enjoy!

As part of the Phase 1 implementation of Humber’s Integrated Energy Master Plan (IEMP), Facilities Management is replacing failing exterior building envelope with new systems with more insulation, triple pane windows and reduced thermal bridging. When complete, the buildings will be more comfortable, require less energy to heat and cool, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and won’t leak!

In 2017 we are working on North Campus Buildings N and E.

Construction has started May 8th and the majority of the work is anticipated to finish mid August 2017.

Building N: recladding construction

The first and second floor will be officially closed from 7:00 a.m. on May 25, 2017. The basement floor will have limited access, which will be by the elevator and exit stairs near NX as well as the entrance at the basement level on the East side of the Building.

Signage will be placed by the contractor to identify the closed areas and to direct staff and students to emergency exits.

The connection from the LRC to Building N at the second floor will be closed, the link to GH will remain open.

Please see attached plans indicating closures. It is anticipated that the closure will remain until mid August.

Building E: recladding construction

The exterior finish and windows will be removed and replaced with new windows and an exterior finish similar to Building F. The majority of the work will take place on the third and fourth floors but the Accounting Centre and the Business School will have scheduled minor disruptions. The building will not be closed. Signage will be placed by the contractor to identify the construction areas and to direct staff and students to emergency exits.

Join in the conversation with the Humber community as the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre hosts our first #DisplayYourPride initiative to celebrate Pride Month at both the North and Lakeshore campuses! Beginning June 1st, we invite you to take a step on the creative side and ‘pride-ify’ your office or student space in the spirit of Pride and celebrate LGBTQ+ communities.

We will be joining our colleagues at Ryerson, University of Toronto, York, and OCAD in this initiative, so let’s show everyone our Humber Hawk Pride! This event is a fabulous way to build awareness and create safer communities for LGBTQ+ folks across Humber.

To participate:

  • Take a photo of your space and upload it to Twitter or Instagram using the hashtags: #DisplayYourPride   #HumberLGBTQ   #WeAreProud
  • You can also follow us on Twitter and Instagram @HumberLGBTQ to see Humber’s Pride

This event is open to everyone, so join in and let loose! Remember - there are no limitations or expectations; let your creativity shine through. This is your Pride, your way.

The #DisplayYourPride initiative is open to everyone, but for those with a competitive spirit, there is one more way for you to get involved.

#DisplayYourPride CONTEST Guidelines:

  • The design of your space should encompass diversity and inclusion as per Pride Toronto’s theme  of “+”
  • Contest participants must email a photo of their space to LGBTQ@humber.ca by Wednesday, June 21st (in the subject line include your room number, campus, and indicate whether you are entering as an individual or group)
  • You must post your photo to Twitter or Instagram using the hashtags #DisplayYourPride AND #HumberLGBTQ AND #WeAreProud
  • The contest component is optional
  • There will be 1 individual and 1 group prize for each campus!

Call for Proposals - humber.ca/liberalarts-ifoa

The State of (In)Equality: Social Justice Under Siege is the fourth annual interdisciplinary conference presented by Humber College’s School of Liberal Arts and Sciences in association with the International Festival of Authors (IFOA).

Harbourfront Centre Toronto: October 28-29, 2017
Keynote Speaker: Susan N. Herman, President of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

CFP: The perceived orthodoxy of progressive politics has come under attack in recent years by individuals, groups, and institutions that believe their actions and speech are being policed. The term ‘social justice warrior’ (SJW) emerged in 2011. This attempted to switch the term ‘social justice’ (which has since 1840 been primarily a positive concept) into a mainstream pejorative to dismiss those who espoused views concerning social progressivism, civil rights, cultural inclusiveness, gay rights, or feminism. For those activists and researchers who have spent their lives trying to change society for the better, this is a troubling turn. Our conference will examine the current and past state(s) of inequality and social justice from a multi-disciplinary perspective.

  • Indigenous studies
  • Democracy vs. capitalism
  • Poverty and Economic inequality
  • Civil rights
  • Social movements
  • Anti-globalisation
  • Post-neoliberalism
  • Past and future of labour
  • Identity politics
  • Racial inequality
  • Retribalization
  • Rule of law
  • Neo-reactionary
  • Post-humanism and social activism
  • Decolonization
  • Racialization
  • Gender inequality, eco-feminism
  • Social construction of difference
  • Reparations/reconciliation
  • Social democracy
  • Social justice backlash
  • Pluralistic identities
  • Peace and justice
  • Health inequality
  • Ableism
  • Heterosexism
  • Access to education
  • Environmental activism
  • Abuse of state power

We welcome proposals from researchers within all relevant academic disciplines.

If accepted, the presenter(s) should prepare a 20 minute presentation each, the oral equivalent of approximately 8 to 10 pages, double spaced, in Times New Roman 12pt font.

Deadline for Proposals: May 30, 2017

SUMMER VACATION PLANNING

Vacation time is an essential part of a healthy work-life balance. All staff are encouraged to schedule and plan their yearly vacation allotment in consultation with their manager.

In order to ensure that requests are considered fairly and effectively, please be advised of the following guidelines and related articles from the Collective Agreements:

Academic Staff (Article 15 – Vacations)

Academic Staff (Professors, Librarians and Counsellors) are entitled to a two month vacation period as scheduled by their manager. Managers, in consultation with the employee and HR, may arrange alternative dates for vacation periods depending upon academic and operational requirements. All requests should be submitted in writing.

Please note: individuals may request to have vacation scheduled in other than a contiguous two-month block.

For the majority of academic staff, the two month 2017 summer vacation period is as follows:

  • Begins: Monday, June 26, 2017
  • Ends: Friday, August 25, 2017

Faculty return on Monday, August 28, 2017. Classes begin on Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

Support Staff (Article 11 – Vacation)

Vacations are scheduled using the following guidelines:

  1. Support Staff are entitled to three (3) consecutive weeks of vacation as scheduled by the College, unless otherwise agreed. There is no guarantee that these three weeks can be scheduled during the summer months, but the College will consider these requests consistent with staffing requirements;
  2. The vacation period of July and August is to be shared fairly amongst all employees. Recognizing operational needs may preclude certain vacation requests, the College will endeavour to accommodate all staff vacation requests. Consideration shall be given for length of service if a conflict arises;
  3. Support Staff are required to submit their written vacation preferences to their manager by March 1, 2017. Managers will communicate the approved vacation schedule in writing within two weeks following the March 1st submission;
  4. Support Staff may carry over up to 15 days of vacation as of June 30th of each year, subject to an agreement with their manager to schedule the carryover days in the following year;
  5. The College maintains a practice of not replacing staff while they are on vacation.

SUMMER HOURS AND SATUTORY HOLIDAY

Summer Hours

During the period from May to August, where operationally feasible, management has the authority and discretion to establish summer working hours for their employees. These hours may vary from regular operating hours.

Summer hours usually mean that employees continue to work their full number of hours each week, but may start and finish earlier or later in the day.  When considering requests for summer hours, managers are encouraged to engage in conversation to discuss feasible options while ensuring regular customer service is maintained.

Should there be any questions regarding the scheduling and/or taking of vacation, or the observance of holidays, please contact your HR Consultant/Manager:

Overtime pay on the early closing days shall apply only in situations where employees are required to work beyond their regular number of work hours and have the approval of their manager.

Statutory Holiday Pay

Staff required to work on a statutory holiday shall be paid time and one half for each hour worked, plus holiday pay.

Part-time staff may be eligible for holiday pay, plus time and one half pay, for hours worked on any statutory holiday. To qualify for statutory holiday pay, part-time employees must have worked on their scheduled day of work preceding and following the recognized holiday.

Accessible Learning Services is pleased to introduce our new web portal which allows faculty to access student accommodation letters online.

Benefits of the Faculty Web Portal:

  • Faculty can view accommodation letters in two ways, by course or by student name.*
  • Faculty can access student accommodation letters online from any place, at any time through a secure web portal.
  • Faculty are notified as new students connect with ALS throughout the semester.
  • The portal displays the most recent version of the accommodation letter so in cases where accommodations are changing throughout the semester due to the nature of the functional limitations and/or program demands, faculty will no longer need to sort through multiple emails or files.

*Please note that students continue to have the option of self-managing the distribution of their accommodation letters. For this relatively small portion of students, faculty will continue to receive accommodation letters directly from students either electronically or in hardcopy. We ask that faculty continue to store these letters securely.
