The Editorial Board of the Canadian Journal of Students’ Applied Research (CJSAR) in collaboration with Humber Press would like to invite submissions for publication in the 2018 edition.

The CJSAR is an online, open-access journal dedicated to publishing the very best original, applied research produced by students enrolled in Canadian colleges, institutes of technologies and polytechnics. We are committed to publishing work that reflects the interdisciplinary character of Canadian colleges, institutes of technologies, and polytechnics. As such, we encourage submissions in non-traditional publication formats including (but not limited to) multi-media documents that combine interlink text, image, film or audio/soundscape material.

Publication consideration will also be given to other high-quality creative outputs like comprehensive literature reviews, critical book reviews, personal profile interviews, research notes, etc. For more information or to submit a manuscript for consideration, visit cjsar.ca.

CJSAR accepts submissions year-round. However, to be considered for publication in the 2018 issue, manuscripts must be submitted by May 15, 2017.

Please direct any questions to Dr. Ted Glenn (ted.glenn@humber.ca), Editor-in-Chief.

Guelph-Humber Media Studies faculty, Dr. Cinda Gault, has released her novel, This Godforsaken Place.

In 1885, 22-year-old British immigrant, Abigail Peacock, finds herself stranded in northwestern Ontario with a father who has fallen gravely ill. Resisting what seems to be an inevitable future, a sensible career as a teacher, and marriage to a local storeowner, Abigail buys a gun. And everything changes.

Her seemingly ordinary life turns extraordinary when a member of the Jesse James Gang, Shep January, turns up with a Pinkerton detective close behind. Unintentionally shooting and killing the detective, Abigail accepts January's proposal to take his guns and stolen cash to Annie Oakley in the Bill Cody Wild West show. Oakley connects her to Shea Wyatt, a lawyer who can help prove her innocence

There’s just one problem. The Pinkerton brothers refuse to accept that the killer of their detective is a woman…or that it was an accident. When Wyatt himself is wrongfully convicted of murder, Abigail and Annie commandeer Métis military leader, Gabriel Dumont, for help.

Set against dramatic myths of the Canadian wilderness and the American Wild West, Abigail's adventure introduces her to some of the most infamous characters of her time, and brings the high stakes of the New World into startling focus.

This Godforsaken Place is available to purchase here.

The final exam period is upon us, and as a result, Testing Services will be operating at maximum capacity over the next few weeks.

The Lakeshore Campus Testing Centre will be extremely busy the week of April 17-21.
We will see upwards of 150 students per day in the Lakeshore Test Centre.

The North Campus Testing Centre will be extremely busy the weeks of April 17-21 and 24-28.
We see upwards of 500 students per day at the North Test Centre.

  • Testing Services may need to prioritize accommodated testing during the Humber and University of Guelph-Humber exam period (April 10-May 2), in order to reduce wait times and ensure that students who require accommodated testing are able to gain access.
  • Whenever possible, please refrain from sending non-accommodated testing activity to the test centres during the final exam period.  Reducing the amount of non-accommodated testing will significantly reduce wait times.
  • As a gentle reminder, when students are using the test centres, please submit exams a few days in advance to ensure a seamless check-in process.  When test referral forms are completed with all permitted materials and accommodation details clearly outlined it helps to reduce wait times for students.

Thank you in advance for your support in improving the test taking experience for students in Testing Services.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Manager, Testing & Integrated Services, Leah Barclay at extension 4696.

Did you know that the Gender Diversity Policy outlines Humber’s position as it relates to Self-Identification?

Provided below is an overview of Humber’s statement on Self-Identification located in section one (1.1) of Humber’s Gender Diversity Policy:

Self-identification is the sole and whole measure of a person’s gender.

a) No person shall be asked or required to 'prove' their gender (e.g. by providing a doctor's note, identity documents, etcetera) in order to gain access to any facilities, activities, initiatives and opportunities within the Humber College learning, working and/or living environment.

b) However, if a person, having established a relationship with the College which is reflected in documents created and stored by the College (whether electronic or hard copy), seeks a change in those documents to reflect their gender and/or preferred gender pronoun, appropriate identification documents will be required in order to ensure against identity fraud. For this purpose, appropriate identification documents for Ontario Residents may include the Change of Name document from the Office of the Registrar General.
