It is with mixed emotions that I share the news that Melissa Gallo, currently the Associate Director, Advising & Career Services, will be leaving Humber on September 15th to take on the role of Director, Student Success Initiatives at Mohawk College.

Melissa’s contributions to Humber during her thirteen plus years of service have been significant and include the advancement of new programs such as peer mentoring, the initial launch of a First Generation student program, and her work to advance service learning initiatives both in and out of the classroom. In her current role Melissa has significantly advanced key integrated advising objectives from advisor training to the deployment of hybrid career & academic advising. She has made important service improvements that include an online appointment booking system, enhanced referral pathways with the Academic Schools, and worked with campus partners to develop new programs such as the Transition to Work Event for students with Disabilities. We will miss Melissa’s entrepreneurial spirit, her clarity of vision as well as her team spirit.  Please join me in congratulating Melissa on her new appointment.

New library website design

Humber Libraries is very excited to announce the launch of our new website. Check it out at library.humber.ca.

The new design, created by Humber students in the Web Design and Interactive, Web Development, and Graphic Design programs, was chosen by the majority of library users in an April 2017 survey.

Highlights include:

  • A simplified layout.
  • The About Us menu includes the staff list and a reports section.
  • The More Options link under the Discover box provides a gateway to alternative search choices.

We'd like to hear from you. Email us at libaccess@humber.ca with your feedback on the new library website.

I’m pleased to announce the appointment of two new full-time faculty members in the Bachelor of Music program: trumpeter Brian O’Kane and trombonist Kelsley Grant.

A widely respected brass musician, Brian holds a master’s degree in jazz performance from the University of Toronto, and has played trumpet and flugelhorn with top domestic and international jazz artists, including the Kirk MacDonald Jazz Orchestra, Barbra Streisand, and Aretha Franklin. He is equally well known for his work with classical ensembles such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and True North Brass. He has extensive experience as a pit musician and was a member of the Shaw Festival Orchestra from 2013 to 2016. Brian is also in demand as a clinician and adjudicator at colleges, universities, and music festivals.

Kelsley is one of the most sought-after trombonists in Canada. Since completing his graduate studies at the renowned Manhattan School of Music, he has toured internationally as part of Maynard Fergusonʼs Big Bop Nouveau and performed with Aretha Franklin, Michael Bublé, and Sophie Milman, among many others. Like Brian, Kelsley has extensive experience as a pit musician. His work can also be heard on the soundtracks of the movies Born to Be Blue, Cirque de Soleil – Alegria, and Les Triplettes de Belleville. In addition to Humber, Kelsley has taught at McGill University, University of Montreal, and University of Toronto.

With the addition of Brian and Kelsley to our full-time faculty, Humber remains a national leader in professional music training. Please join me in welcoming them to their new positions.
