“Can you give CPR to a bird?”
The group of Humber College Nursing students had gone out to enjoy the beautiful May weather, but now they hovered near a fallen ball of orange feathers waiting to see if their health care skills could help.
Jimmy Vincent, Coordinator of Education, Camps, and Community Outreach at the Humber Arboretum, assured the group that in this case no drastic measures were necessary. The Baltimore Oriole who had mistaken the reflection of trees for the real thing had only been stunned when it flew into a window at the Centre for Urban Ecology, and would just a need a few quiet minutes to recuperate.
But sadly, many window strikes don’t end nearly as well. It’s been estimated that anywhere between one million and one billion birds are killed each year in North America alone due to collisions with buildings. Those numbers come from Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) Canada, a Toronto-based charity dedicated to protecting birds in built environments.
The Humber Arboretum is thrilled to announce that bird-friendly window film has now been installed on key sections of the Centre for Urban Ecology, which should help drastically reduce or even eliminate future window strikes. Bird-friendly film uses a repeating pattern to visually break up the glass so birds can recognize it for the barrier – and danger – that it is.
The Humber Arboretum is a year-round home and a migratory stopover for a wide variety of bird species, ranging from songbirds to shorebirds to raptors. When migratory birds travel through North America they tend to travel along four major paths, called “flyways”. The City of Toronto is in a truly special spot, as this is where the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways converge.
So come by the Humber Arboretum to do some bird watching and to have a look at our brand new life-saving dots. And remember, window strikes aren’t just a concern for skyscrapers and big glass boxes like the CUE – they take place at homes, cottages, and commercial buildings of all sizes. To learn how you can make your glass bird-friendly, visit flap.org.

Film & Television Production students Fiona Cleary (director) and Justin MacDonald (producer) had their 2nd year documentary short become available on all of Air Canada's in-flight entertainment systems today, as part of this year's EnRoute Film Festival. The film is in competition, along with 12 other films, and was selected to compete from among hundreds of entries. Anyone flying Air Canada this summer can watch and vote for the film during their flight.
Additionally, it will be online at enroutefilm.com as voting begins for the festival's People's Choice Award. With each vote, the voter is also entered into a contest for a trip for 2 to anywhere in North America that Air Canada flies.
Also, another Humber film, Bosniak (2015), is featured in the EnRoute Film Festival this year, but it is not in compeitition.

Client satisfaction is very important to Information Technology Services. We regularly survey our Clients and, based on student and employee feedback, a number of changes are now being implemented at the Support Centre to further improve the delivery of services.
Starting on August 3rd, the Support Centre will be partnering with a third-party to complement its team in providing support to the Humber community. Going forward, students and employees can expect a significantly shorter wait to speak to an Analyst.
As well, the Support Centre will also start offering Web chat as a new support channel later this Summer. Chat is a real-time, text interface. The new channel will allow the Support Centre to offer students and employees quick and easy access to support services.
But that is not all! Starting on August 3rd, the Support Centre’s hours will be expanding to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year for telephone, e-mail, and Web chat. The expanded hours will better accommodate distance learners and flexible learning.
IMPORTANT: Please note that the hours of operation for face-to-face support at the North (NX210), Lakeshore (A212), Orangeville, and Carrier campuses remain unchanged.
And finally, Information Technology Services will also be introducing a new service management platform this Fall. The new platform will further enhance services by enabling workflow automation. It also includes powerful self-help and self-service options for Clients.
With these four key improvements, Clients can expect better responsiveness, greater availability, improved accessibility, and faster ticket turnaround. For more information, please contact Ryan Burton, Director of I.T. Planning & Client Services, at x5290 any time.
Before closing, please note that the structure of the I.T. Planning & Client Services division within Information Technology is not changing. Please continue to engage Lora Nasim, Manager of Client Services, at lora.nasim@humber.ca or x5261 to escalate tickets.
