The International Centre is currently collecting ice skates. If you have a pair that you are no longer using, you have grown out of, or simply do not want, please drop them off in the International Centre (Lake H100A or North D224) and we will put them to good use! Our International students are eager to try ice skating this winter and we need your donations to help make this winter activity a great success. Skates of any size are welcome.

Thank you!

Please join me in congratulating Professor Muhammad Sid-Ahmad from the Department of English in the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, on the successful completion of his doctorate at the University of Toronto.

Muhammad’s thesis, titled, Hayy bin Yaqzan and His Influence on Early-Modern England was supervised by Dr. Mary Nyquist, who has been recognized on numerous occasions for her works on Milton and feminism. Other members of his committee included Professor Suzanne Akbari, noted author in the field of Medieval Literary History and Western Literature; Professor Paul Stevens, Canada Research Chair in Early Modern Literature and culture, and Nabil Matar, external examiner, whose work has changed the perception of Anglo-Muslim relations in the early modern period.

As noted by his external examiners, “this dissertation presents an innovative interpretation of the influence of Hayy ibn Yaqzan on three English writers: John Milton, John Locke, and Daniel Defoe.”

The Business School recently hosted two visiting professors from Business Academy Aarhus in Denmark. While at Humber, they had the opportunity to audit courses, facilitate a lesson, exchange ideas with and learn from Humber colleagues and participate in other professional development opportunities with the Centre for Teaching and Learning.

In an evaluation of the two-week program, one Aarhus professor stated, “I very much enjoyed participating in the classroom lectures. The excellent [Humber] professors have a very high level of knowledge about what they teach. It is clear to me that they represent excellence in what they do. There is no doubt in my mind that Humber is a great place to both work and study. You are doing a great job!”

Humber Employee Engagement Survey (November 17-28) – How do I participate?
The Employee Engagement Survey is an important institutional initiative that will help us to make Humber an even better place to work and learn. The online survey will be anonymous and take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Watch your inbox for a personalized invitation from CCI Research – the external research firm that will administer the survey and conduct analysis on the responses – the email will contain a link to the secure website. The survey link will be live from November 17-28. You do not have to complete the survey in one session, and will be free to save your responses and return at a later date. We need your input and encourage you to respond to the survey as soon as possible.

Visit humber.ca/employeesurvey for more information about the survey.

In spring 2014, the academic calendar was published indicating that the first day of winter semester classes would be Wednesday, January 7, 2015. To better support teaching and learning, and to assist in a smooth start to the winter semester, the Executive Team has approved a change to the Academic Calendar and the first day of classes has been changed to Monday, January 12, 2015. Reading Week is still scheduled for February 16-20 and the winter semester will now end on Friday, May 1.

For an updated version of the academic calendar, please visit humber.ca/admissions/academic-calendar

Students who may have travel or accommodation conflicts related to this change, should speak to their program coordinator in January.
