The Violent Unconscious in Film

Film Title:        Cache (2005)
Date:                Wednesday, November 10, 2010
Time:                7 p.m.
Location:          E135 (Humber North Campus)

Synopsis:
A successful couple has it all: a thoughtful son, prestigious jobs and bookshelves overflowing with the Classics. But they start receiving mysterious surveillance videos of their home in the mail. "It must be a prank," they think, "...or is it?" In the age of big budget, fast-paced action thrillers, Cache keeps us in total suspense with nothing but subtle-acting, realistic scenarios, and a haunting story about how past actions and buried memories can have the power to corrupt a marriage, a family, and a life.

Film Title:        Elephant (2003)
Date:                Wednesday, November 24. 2010
Time:                7 p.m.
Location:         E135 (North Campus)

Synopsis:
Elephant chronicles the day-to-day personal lives of ordinary American teenagers in the moments leading up to a high school shooting. Based in part on the Colombine High School shootings of 1999, this critically-acclaimed film - which won the Palme D'Or at Cannes and was recently named by the AGO/Cinematheque as one of the top films of the decade - sensitively depicts the complex reasons behind such a tragic event, and warns us of what can happen when we collectively ignore the 'elephant in the room.'
