Addressing Anti-Black Racism in the Post-Secondary Environment: Moving from Theory to Practice

Speaker bio: Gary Pieters, MEd - Ontario Human Rights Commissioner

Gary Pieters currently serves as an Ontario Human Rights Commissioner on 2 of the 3 pillars of Ontario's Human Rights System. He is also a Board Member of the Human Rights Legal Support Centre (HRLSC).

Gary Pieters is an educator, who began his entry into the teaching profession as a public school teacher in Southern California. He returned to Canada in 1999, and has served in various roles as a teacher, a vice-principal, and a principal in the publicly funded education system in Ontario.

He also serves as a member of the Ontario Ministry of Education - Minister's Advisory Council on Special Education (MACSE). He has recently served on the Ontario College of Teachers’ transitional roster, supporting Discipline/Fitness to Practice from March 2021-January 2022.

Gary is also an immediate past president of the Urban Alliance on Race Relations. His extensive knowledge base and experience are leveraged through community building, youth engagement, diversity, and social inclusion.

Student Transfer Services will be hosting the Power Up Your Credential virtual information series between February 25 and April 15, 2022.    

The purpose of this series is to promote Humber’s degrees and graduate certificates to our current students as well as prospective students from other institutions. As part of Humber’s retention strategy, we would like to make our students aware of what’s available at Humber, with the hopeful expectation they will choose to stay and continue their studies with us.

Counselling Services is excited to announce that they will be running a virtual mindfulness group this winter 2022 semester called The Mindful Way. This will be a nine-week closed group with a maximum of 12 participants. The group involves a combination of psycho-education, mindfulness skills and experiential learning.

The closed group starts on Thursday, February 3 and will run for nine weeks every Thursday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Zoom.

All of the information, dates and topics, is on the poster attached.

Important information before referring:

  • This is a nine-week closed group. Students are expected to attend all sessions. Please view attached poster.
  • Students will be asked to keep their video on in the group as interaction is a huge part of this group (involves break out rooms and skill practice).
  • Interested students will meet with one of the facilitators to assess for group fit before registration.

Join us in a session from Tracey Frimpong. Tracey is a registered dietitian born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. She currently works at St. Michael's Hospital as a clinical dietitian assessing nutritional status and implementing recommendations in acute care. Tracey is also a Content Creator (@ThatBlackRD/www.thatblackRD.com) who provides insight into her personal journey as a dietitian, influencer of culture on health and wellness, recipes, food sovereignty, and promotes Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC) in healthcare.  

In this session, Tracey will be discussing systemic racism and health inequities, BIPOC in health care, food security/sovereignty, and celebrating food freedom.

Join us for this 90 minute-long introduction to solving challenges and opportunities. We will have some fun understanding why we work so well with some people and not so well with others. From this workshop, we will explore how the Basadur Simplexity Profile developed by Dr. Min Basadur sets the stage for optimizing how we solve challenges and opportunities individually and collectively.

This intro workshop is a prerequisite for Simplexity Level 1 for Problem Solving.

Pathways to Human Rights, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Education & Action

The Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning and the University of Guelph-Humber (Humber) is committed to fostering a respectful and inclusive culture in which all members of the College community study, work and live free from discrimination and harassment.

The Centre is currently reviewing the Pathways to Human Rights, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Education & Action training (Pathways to Human Rights training). A pilot relaunch of the revised training is now being offered. The date, time and registration link are below. Register now to secure your spot.

Please note:

  • Registration for this training will be limited to the first 25 registrants
  • Full credit for completion of the mandatory Pathways to Human Rights training will be awarded to those who attend this session
  • In addition to our regular post session evaluation, participants may be asked to take part in a quick post session focus group or one on one telephone chat

Requirements for registration:

  • You have not yet completed a Pathways to Human Rights training at Humber
  • You are willing to provide feedback of the training through either a brief focus group or a quick one-on-one chat

  1. Understand the scope and rationale for the policy
  2. Describe the four core areas of the policy
