When EDI Principles Meet the Field of Science and Engineering: The Case of Research and Development Projects in the Environment at CTRI

While equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles play a crucial role in research project design and management, they are often more readily applied in humanities and social innovation projects. But how can these principles be effectively integrated into research and development in science and engineering? This workshop will explore EDI practices at the Centre technologique des résidus industriels (CTRI) at Cégep de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Through concrete examples from the centre’s management model and environmental research projects, participants will gain insights into practical applications of EDI in STEM fields. A Q&A session will then provide an opportunity to delve deeper into these practices, followed by small group discussions where participants can reflect on and share strategies for strengthening EDI in their own work.

All Humber faculty (full and part-time), staff, and students are invited to the ACER Community of Interest.

The Community of Interest (CI) offers an informal, virtual platform for the Humber community to connect over their shared interest in topics related to aging. Highlights from ACER’s previous CI Meetings can be read on our website.

This virtual 'brown bag' lunch conversation revolves around subjects that matter to participants, such as articles they would like to discuss, upcoming events, potential research projects, and the sharing of research results. The community meets on the third Thursday of the month from 12 to 1 p.m.

Indigenizing Astronomy: Rediscovering our Knowledge

Modern astronomy has transformed our understanding of our place in the universe. Indigenous knowledge travels through time - from time immemorial and from generation to generation - and the night sky has always been an important part of it. But the scientific contributions of Native People have been underestimated and forgotten from school curricula, and many telescope facilities that are located on Native lands often impact local communities negatively.

In this lecture, Dr. Laurie Rosseau-Nepton will share her experiences as a professional astronomer and her personal quest to find astronomy, physics and science in the stories of her Nation, Innu. She will demonstrate the beauty of this knowledge and the importance of preserving it for all generations.

About Dr. Patricia Di Ciano

Dr. Di Ciano is a Scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. Since 2018 she has been conducting regulated and observational studies into the effects of cannabis on driving and related measures of cognition and subjective experience as well as blood and oral fluid THC. She is interested in understanding the complex relationship between impairment and levels of blood THC to better inform the deterrence and detection of use of cannabis while driving. She is also interested in the effects of newer types of cannabis; she is conducting studies with edibles and vapes, both of which have seen a sharp increase in use since legalization in 2018-2019.

About the RAP Speaker Series

The Research Analyst program (RAP) is pleased to host a virtual speakers' series, featuring corporate, social, community, and academic speakers from their respective research sectors. Students benefit by networking with the speakers, and learning about the following topics: technological, regulatory, policy, and employment trends in the industry, key employment skills, the type of opportunities open in research, and the types of tasks and duties that comprise different roles within the sector.

The series is of interest to current and prospective RAP students, current Humber students who are considering post-grad studies at Humber, and want to learn more about careers in research, and individuals within the Humber community curious about the research sector.
