The Transition and Academic Success team is excited to share that Humber Polytechnic has been chosen to host the CICan National Skills for Success Student Hackathon on March 22 and 23, 2025! This is a two-day, hands-on event where students will explore the importance of Skills for Success—the foundational skills critical to career development.

The event invites current students (full time and part time) and recent graduates (within the last 12 months) to collaborate on testing and enhancing an innovative online tool designed to help Canadians create personalized career pathways. This tool will empower Canadians by:

  • Identifying their skills and understanding gaps,
  • Connecting them to labour market insights, and
  • Providing pathways to training and education offered by CICan member institutions.

Our HLO Framework emphasizes critical skills such as communication, problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation—skills that are also central to the Skills for Success Model. By incorporating these skills into our curriculum and extracurricular activities, we ensure that students are well-prepared to meet the demands of the modern workforce.

Why should learners participate? This is a great opportunity for them to stand out to future employers with enhanced skills and real-world project experience on their resume. Participants will also receive an honorarium, and a certificate to bolster their professional portfolio. No prior experience is required!

Applications to participate will be open from March 5 at 9 a.m. until March 12 at 4 p.m. Only 15 spots are available, and successful applicants will be contacted by March 17.

Student applications for the Hackathon can be submitted here: https://tinyurl.com/HumberHackathon. Please share with your students! For any questions, please contact careers@humber.ca.

Humber Music Presents R&B NIGHT featuring three ensembles, the R&B Ensemble, Rhythm ‘n Soul, and Future Pop Ensemble. This will be an upbeat concert treating audiences to an evening of groove, blues and soul.

The R&B Ensemble directed by Jonathan Kay will open the program. This group performs everything from classic rhythm and blues as it originated in the heart of the African American communities of the 1940s through the1970s, to this genre's evolution through the Neo-Soul movement right to its contemporary forms at the intersections of soul and hip-hop.

Next on the program, the Future Pop Ensemble, directed by Thomas Francis will follow. This large ensemble blending contemporary pop, R&B, and dance music with jazz aesthetics and post-funk sounds, delivers a fusion of modern music and innovation. Their performance will explore the dynamic intersection of genre and creativity, offering fresh, energetic interpretations of contemporary styles.

Rounding off the evening, the Rhythm ‘n Soul Ensemble, directed by Will Jarvis will bring the exciting energy of a dynamic twelve-piece band as it blends rhythm and blues with contemporary funk and soul music. The four-part vocals and classic trio of trumpet, saxophone and trombone contribute to the great depth and richness this ensemble brings to original arrangements arrangements of classic R&B, Funk and Soul.

Borgo Contract Seating Presents: The Humber Industrial Design Chair Show

Please join us for the 2025 Humber Polytechnic Industrial Design Chair Show! This year’s design concept is “a more sustainable future”. In partnership with Plastic Flux, the students have integrated Plastic Flux’s recycled polypropylene sheets into their designs as seating and tablet elements. The chair frames are made of mild steel, so together with the Plastic Flux material, the chair designs are over 90 per cent recyclable.

The 2025 Chair Show is presented by Borgo Contract Seating who without their help and guidance the project would not be possible. We also owe a debt of gratitude to Manortools Ltd. who assisted the students with the metal tube bending. Thank you to Faculty of Media, Creative Arts, and Design Associate Dean, Jenny Charlotte-Hill for her continued support of the project. Also a special thanks to Nienkamper, Copernicus Educational Products, Handling Space, and Anony for their generous support of the Chair Show.

We look forward to seeing you on March 20.

Admission: Free and open to the public
Faculty contact: odin.cappello@humber.ca

Additional info:

The Chair Show is the public exhibition of the Industrial Design 2nd year studio chair project. It is also a design competition judged by a panel of noteworthy local design professionals from companies such as Nienkamper, Borgo, Copernicus, and more. The four winning designs (first, second, third and people’s choice) will be announced during the evening of the show. The Chair Show is attended by over 100 people each year, including design professionals, industry insiders, students, family and friends. Interviews, photo and video opportunities will be available. When EDI Principles Meet the Field of Science and Engineering: The Case of Research and Development Projects in the Environment at CTRI

While equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles play a crucial role in research project design and management, they are often more readily applied in humanities and social innovation projects. But how can these principles be effectively integrated into research and development in science and engineering? This workshop will explore EDI practices at the Centre technologique des résidus industriels (CTRI) at Cégep de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Through concrete examples from the centre’s management model and environmental research projects, participants will gain insights into practical applications of EDI in STEM fields. A Q&A session will then provide an opportunity to delve deeper into these practices, followed by small group discussions where participants can reflect on and share strategies for strengthening EDI in their own work.
