After a twenty-year absence, Odysseus returns to Ithaca only to find the war he thought was long over has now reached his homeland. His home is filled with a ragtag group of old friends and enemies, refugees from Troy, and various mythical creatures, huddled together under cover from heavy air raids. Inspired by Homer’s Odyssey and set against a Blitz-like bombing campaign, To Ithaca explores the space between action and inaction, violence and pity. It is created and directed by Tatiana Jennings, with choreography by Sharon Moore, and creative work by Humber College’s graduating Theatre Performance and Theatre Production students.

Natural mindfulness and citizen science come together at the Humber Arboretum this Family Day weekend. Join staff from the Humber Arboretum, Bird Studies Canada, and Project Soul for a free and memorable morning of connection and contribution.

  • We will begin with an outdoor natural mindfulness session led by yoga teacher and life coach Harold St. George (which will take place on snowshoes if weather permits). Participants will be introduced to the concept of a sit-spot and how it relates to becoming more aware of the natural world.
  • We will then be in the perfect mindset to take part in Bird Studies Canada's Great Backyard Bird Count, noting all the birds around us in the Arboretum with the guidance of experienced birdwatchers.
  • Back at the Centre for Urban Ecology, we will add our observations to the GBBC bird tallies taking place across North America between February 17-20, and learn how that information will aid scientists and organizations such as Bird Studies Canada.

This event is FREE and all are welcome but registration is required. Visit the Humber Arboretum website or humberarb.eventbrite.ca to reserve your spot.

The Humber Arboretum is located at the back of North Campus. Meet for the event inside the Centre for Urban Ecology, the building with the bright red door just up the path from the Arboretum's entrance.

With the increasing independence of both men and women, the economic gains to marriage have diminished dramatically. But if the purpose of love is no longer to ensure our economic well-being, is modern love all consumption? The nature of love might seem like an unlikely topic for an economist, but it is useful to understand how treating love as a commodity is affecting our relationships. In this lecture, Dr. Adshade will argue that this change in perspective is good for relationships because it encourages us to love consciously and to treat love as an informed decision rather than a flight of fancy.

If you have ever wondered about embedding meaningful authentic assessment into your courses, this workshop is for you. Signature assignments are complex student projects used in multiple courses and across time, with instructors partnering together to plan the project description and criteria for success. They allow students to delve deeply into one large assignment that integrates their learning from two or more courses in the same semester, rather than spreading their efforts thinly across numerous disparate assignments.  Bring your course outline and program learning outcomes to explore how you can incorporate signature assignments into your courses.
