Explore the L Space gallery - It will feature 'Refraction,' an installation that highlights notable works from Humber Galleries and Collection, in dialogue with the many faculties, pedagogies and research areas explored throughout the college.

Instructors, representing all academic schools, were approached to collaborate on this unique initiative and to lend their expertise and knowledge to interpret, question and evaluate the selected artworks. The resulting exhibition, in turn, provides viewers with multiple lenses through which they might begin to consider the works anew. During the exhibition, viewers' interpretations of the artworks will be collected. Descriptions can include personal, professional or other responses, illustrating the many ways that art can be accessed and interpreted.

Open May 28th, 2016 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. as part of Doors Open Toronto presented by Great Gulf.

Don't forget to also explore Humber's Art Commons (registration for workshop ONLY, tours are open), the Centre for Justice Leadership and Humber's Historic Tunnel Tours.

Off the Page: Kinesthetic & Tactile Typography Project

Bachelor of Creative Advertising | Typography 1 & Typography 2
Instructors: Janice Fung & Sarah Nasby

This exhibition showcases the work of a collaborative project between the first and third year Bachelor of Creative Advertising students. In the second half of the winter 2016 semester, their Typography 1 and 2 classes were blended with the challenge to create an expressive and kinesthetic typographic poster and video to inspire others to think, act and feel in a way that results in positive action or change. The project was made possible by the support of the CTL Teaching Innovation Fund allowing for the purchase of new equipment and support to explore the research question set out by Fung and Nasby: “Does kinesthetic and tactile learning enhance the engagement and understanding of typography in design among BoCA students?”. Students worked with a variety of tactile materials and equipment including Silhouette cutting machines. The works in the exhibition include prototypes, team signs and final executions. Special thanks to Heidi Marsh, Chris Pankewich, Suganthan Jeyarajah and the CTL Teaching Innovation Fund.

There are over 40 publicly accessed AEDs (automated external defibrillators) installed throughout Humber campuses and buildings. Additional AEDs were installed in the LRC and the new F building expansion. As a continuation of the AED initiative, and to complement the presence of Public Safety security guards who are trained in first aid, we continue to look at growing a roster of Humber employees who are trained in CPR and the use of AEDs throughout all Humber buildings. HRS|Health and Safety Services have been scheduling a series of CPR/AED courses focusing on members from Humber’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC). Our courses are open to Humber College employees, particularly those who work in close proximity to an AED.

The following First Aid, CPR and AED training courses have been scheduled:

1. Standard First Aid (includes CPR/AED)

  • North Campus (Room H407), Thu, May 26 and Fri, May 27, 2016, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • North Campus (Room H407), Thu, Jun 16 and Fri, Jun 17, 2016, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

2. CPR-C/AED

  • North Campus (Room E453), Mon, Jun 20, 2016, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

First Aid & CPR/AED Course (two days):

This comprehensive course offers first aid and CPR skills for those who need training for work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. The course covers a variety of topics from basic (circulation and breathing emergencies, and prevention of disease transmission) to in-depth topics (sudden medical emergencies and injuries to the head and/or spine). Successful completion leads to a Standard First Aid and CPR certification from the Canadian Red Cross.

The First Aid & CPR/AED course is highly recommended for members of the ERT and the JOHSC, as well as Humber employees who work in locations away from the main campuses (i.e. Fashion Institute).

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and AED Training (half-day):

This 5 hour CPR/AED course will be provided by a Red Cross First Aid/CPR instructor and is intended to provide the skills and confidence needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking, either in the workplace or at home. The course will also familiarize you with the AEDs that have been installed on campus and how to use them. Successful completion leads to a CPR certification from the Canadian Red Cross.

To Register: Please email Humaira Pirooz at humaira.pirooz@humber.ca and state the session that you would like to attend. Ensure your manager has approved your attendance before you sign up.

Please note that those with a current First Aid or CPR/AED certificate are not eligible for this training.
