Humber’s International Centre cordially invites faculty and staff to attend the Opening Reception for a new L Space Gallery Exhibit in celebration of International Education Week (IEW): “Global Lens – Student Images from Home and Abroad”.

“Global Lens – Student images from home and abroad” is a visual demonstration of student learning through study and work experiences, both in Canada and abroad. Humber is home to over 3,000 international students who represent more than 100 countries around the globe. In addition, each year close to 400 Humber students go abroad for enriching study and work experiences around the world. This exhibition will be a collection of student photographs that will showcase the global perspective our students have gained through their travels and studies. Click here for a sneak peek!

Gallery visitors are invited to contribute their own personal journeys to a large-scale world map, share their views on global citizenship, and participate in creating a global tapestry.

Reception Date: Monday, November 17th, 2014

New international students are about to face their first Canadian winter. Many have already prepared for it, but others did not anticipate the bitter reality of Toronto’s winter temperatures or the cost of a good quality jacket.

This is where the Enactus Group’s “Warm Welcome” initiative takes action. Enactus Humber has partnered with the Humber International Centre to collect and distribute as many coats and jackets as possible in the hopes that no international student goes cold this winter. Coats are particularly needed, but gently used accessories (hats, scarves, and mitts) are also welcome

On November 17 and 18, we will be collecting gently used winter wear in the GH building atrium (North) and the Humber International Centre (D224 North, H100A Lakeshore) from 10:30-2:30. The coats will be distributed later in the week.

We need your help in participating through donating and spreading the word. Please mention this “Warm Welcome” campaign event to your peers, co-workers, and classroom students.

This winter, no student should go without this basic necessity. Share the warmth.

To wrap up the events of Composer Week, we will celebrate the life and music of the late Canadian composer and trumpet and flugelhorn player Kenny Wheeler with an evening concert.

The concert will feature performances by the Faculty Small Group, under the music direction of Brian Dickinson, and the Humber Studio Jazz Ensemble, led by Mark Promane.

Kenny Wheeler was known for his jazz, but was also active in free improvisation and even occasionally contributed to rock music recordings. Kenny wrote over one hundred compositions and was a skilled arranger for small groups and larger ensembles.

This concert is open to the public - tickets can be purchased at the door: General Admission: $20, Students / Seniors: $15, Humber music students get in free.

All concert proceeds will go to the Wheeler family.

Humber College Community Partnership Fund Now Accepting Application
Expand Your Community Partnerships!

Humber College Schools/Departments are invited to develop and submit proposals for innovative and engaging initiatives/events with local community non-profit organizations. This funding opportunity supports projects delivered in the Winter, Summer and Fall semesters. In this round of funding the HCCP Fund selection panel will also consider proposals for small demonstration projects and events.

Projects/events funded through this initiative provide the opportunity for academic schools and administrative departments to further cultivate relationships with partners and stakeholders – bringing the community to Humber and taking Humber into the community in support of Humber’s new Strategic plan.

The priority of these initiatives is to enhance the lives of local children, youth, Aboriginal peoples, newcomers and other groups who would benefit from projects/events in ways that enrich learning and increase exposure and access to post-secondary educational possibilities.  These might include pathways into education, training and/or employment and/or build organizational capacity of community agencies who share this same focus.

Community Development is a core piece of the projects/events supported by this fund and is the process of helping communities build on their strengths to support individuals towards their full potential.  These projects will work in partnership with local people and organizations to meet identified needs.   Some guiding principles to consider: keep projects simple and involve as many community people as possible in all planning from the start.

Having Humber students participate in projects is also welcome, as long as their involvement is an opportunity to deepen and apply theoretical knowledge but is not tied to receiving grades for their role. Some examples include: being involved as a mentor, in a volunteer or a paid capacity.

Submissions due:  Friday, November 14, 2014 by 5:00 p.m.
E-mail: lynn.vanlieshout@humber.ca to receive funding application and guidelines
E-mail: sabra.desai@humber.ca  to discuss possible funding ideas, links to community partners and to refine concepts.

Watch as the price per day goes down if you choose multiple camp dates. Please follow the link to our Camp Registration page for more information or to register. humberarboretum.on.ca/sites/pages/camp-reg.html

Please note, at this time we are only catering for students that are within the Toronto District School Board (T.D.S.B.) and the Toronto Catholic District School Board (T.C.D.S.B.). We have chosen to do this as the PD days at both school boards are almost identical.
