Save the date! All faculty, staff and administrators are encouraged to attend a Town Hall meeting on Humber’s draft 2013-2018 Strategic Plan.

As the culmination of Humber’s consultative strategic planning process, the Town Hall meetings will provide an opportunity for members of the community to learn about and share feedback on the draft 2013-2018 Strategic Plan. Please plan to attend one of the meetings to participate in a Q&A session.

The Town Hall meetings will be live-streamed to the Imagine Humber staff website, where viewers can engage with the process by submitting questions online. Stay tuned to the Communique and watch the website for more information in the coming weeks.

Capital explores the darker elements of human nature via the ever popular flat screen TV that commands seemingly benign living spaces. It draws attention to the exploitation necessary for Western culture to acquire and maintain its affluence; the very privilege evident in the spaces photographed.

Since the invention of mechanical imaging, all photographic, cinematic and digital technologies have strived for greater resolution, delivered with greater speed. We want the world reproduced with pristine clarity, in front of our eyes immediately. What is behind our desire for such a large gorgeous image, our obsession with richer colours and the mega density of pixels?

Capital’s juxtaposition of images – struggle amidst comfort – illuminates the massive imbalance of power that is at the core of so much global suffering. Is there a dilemma in watching difficult pictures from a relatively easy vantage point?

All students are unique. Differentiated instruction is an effective teaching practice that is responsive to the on-going learning preferences, interests and readiness of individual learners.

In the workshop, we will discover strategies to differentiate course content and the teaching process in order to foster a positive learning environment. The group will examine practical ways to incorporate this approach into planning and delivery that will allow students to achieve their individual goals.

The role of caregiver, while often rewarding, can also take a tremendous toll on individuals both emotionally and physically. It is critical that caregivers look after themselves as well as the person in their care. This principle is particularly important for members of the “sandwich generation” who are juggling both elder and child care responsibilities.

Whether participants are already caring for an aging family member or plan to take on this role in the future, this seminar provides important information for them to consider.

Topics include the emotional and physical responses that often accompany caregiving and the development of healthy habits and positive coping strategies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the emotions typically experienced by caregivers and why they occur.
  • Discover strategies to make caregiving easier.
  • Acquire tools to increase the level of satisfaction associated with the caregiver role.

The Early Childhood Program in partnership with the Centre for Urban Ecology is proud to bring the fourth annual Places of Natural Discovery Conference to Humber, North Campus on May 9 and 10, 2013

Keynote speakers on May 9, 2013 are Bill Kilburn of Back to Nature Network and Karen Eilersen of Discovery Child Care Centres. Starting off the day on May 10, 2013 will be Terri LeRoux and Andrew Kett from Credit Valley Conservation Foundation. Following this, the more than 200 participants will enjoy various workshops which focus on connecting children and youth to nature. The conference attracts educators from many parts of the province who are interested in this movement and the complexities of health and wellness facing today's children and families.

Many Humber ECE students are involved as participants and as volunteers again this year. As in previous years, there is a silent auction that will be open early on the 10th in the main concourse and all are welcome!
