Being Social - Social Media in the Classroom: Active dialogue. Faculty continuously desire and attempt to create moments of active dialogue with their students. Within the classroom, that task can be easily achieved, but what about outside of the classroom? Why should the discussion end once the students leave the classroom? Social media tools can help in promoting and continuing the classroom discussion online, using highly accessible, creative, web 2.0 tools such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and WordPress.

Join this workshop to learn more about how social media can help keep the active dialogue going outside of the classroom.

Research has found that students who experience group work in their college classrooms retain more information, are more satisfied with their classes, and have increased persistence in college (Braxton, Milem, and Sullivan, 2000).

Group work can be an effective method to motivate students, encourage active learning, and develop key critical-thinking, communication, and decision-making skills. Despite the research, many students and instructors still resist group work.

Use these suggestions to help implement group work successfully in and particularly outside of your classroom.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. John Jennings, Associate Professor, University at Buffalo

The objectives of the presentation are to:

1) Analyse the concept of masculinity as being anti-institutional, i.e, how does the male ‘rebel’ manifest in students’ academic performance?

2) Understand how gender-stereotypes impact the educational experiences of Black male students.

3) Critically reflect on faculty’s teaching practices and pedagogy.
