A Friendlier Approach to Tackling Food Insecurity - Posted on May 22, 2024

Jaqueline Morgan

Friendlier is helping Humber to reduce its waste footprint by removing single-use packaging from landfills. Now, Humber is expanding that positive impact by utilizing Friendlier to tackle food insecurity at Humber.

Deposits from returned Friendlier containers can now be donated to the newly established Humber Student Food Security Fund. The Fund will help support students in the Humber community who are experiencing food insecurity by offering a subsidy equivalent to $5 per day* for food purchases at Humber. The available funds will be distributed to eligible students in need at the start of each term beginning in Fall 2024.

To access the Fund, Care Coordinators from Student Connection and Community Care, as well as Financial Aid Officers will work with students in need and connect them with available resources, including the Humber Student Food Security Fund.

Food security is an issue that touches everyone. The opportunity to create a Humber-centric fund within the Friendlier app is powerful because it connects food as a fundamental right for all people. When choosing to purchase food on campus, the option to pay forward a meal on campus to another person in need of food is a meaningful way to build community consciousness through equitable access to food for all.

How it works:

  • Receive your on-campus meal in a Friendlier container and pay a $0.50 deposit
  • Enjoy your meal and scrape what is left into the organics bin
  • Scan the QR code on the back of the container using the Friendlier app
  • Return your container to a blue Friendlier collection bin (available throughout food service areas, and main hallways)
  • Instead of redeeming your deposit, choose to donate the proceeds to the Humber Food Security Fund right within the Friendlier app (click here to download on Apple or Android

If you have any questions about the Friendlier container program, please email sustainability@humber.ca

*The funds are calculated based on a five-day school week. Therefore, the subsidy will be the equivalent of $25 per week for the duration of each term.

Attitudinal and Behavioural Barriers Impacting Access for Persons with Disabilities in Postsecondary Education - Posted on May 22, 2024

The Postsecondary Education Standards Development Committee (PESDC) 2022 Final Report identified nine barriers to access. Biweekly, ALS will be doing a deep dive into the barriers and recommendations identified.

The recommendations were founded upon principles that accessibility efforts should be proactive, that all areas of an institution have a shared responsibility in promoting access and that students need to navigate a transparent and seamless system.

This week’s focus is on barriers relating to attitudes, behaviours, perceptions and assumptions. The report noted the following:

  • Attitudes can guide behaviours, perceptions and assumptions. They may lead educational institutions to develop policies, procedures and decision-making practices that exclude or marginalize students with disabilities. They can also create barriers for students with disabilities, with some students not feeling welcome or included in class activities, or social situations at school.
  • Attitudinal barriers can also result in a form of internalized ableism.
  • Ableism often goes unrecognized and can significantly and negatively affect a person’s well-being, performance and access to opportunities in work and school.
  • The committee is therefore in agreement with the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s (2018) view that “we will not have an accessible province by 2025 without tackling the social attitudes that prevent persons with disabilities from participating and contributing to the community.”

Recommendations stemming from the report include but are not limited to:

  • Consistently integrate the commitments and values of inclusion into daily practices and decision-making.
  • Development of an instrument to measure the effectiveness of efforts to address ableism amongst the students, and employees to identify gaps in initiatives to shift attitudes, behaviours, beliefs and assumptions related to disability.
  • Take measures to respond to trends and address inequalities that may arise from data collection (for example, underrepresentation of people with certain types of disabilities), recognizing representation does not measure inclusion.

The full report is now available online.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

Blackboard and MS Teams: How to Create and Share a Live Online Class Session in the LMS - Posted on May 22, 2024

Posted:
May 22, 2024

MS Teams is our video hosting platform for live, online classes in Blackboard Ultra.

The recommended method for creating and sharing the link to an online synchronous class in Blackboard is to:

  • create an event in Outlook Calendar using your Humber credentials
  • copy the meeting link and post in the Course Content area and Calendar in Blackboard
  • share link via an Announcement in Blackboard

A helpful step-by-step guide is available.

Important note: When we migrated to MS Teams for online classes in Summer 2023, we integrated a tool (MS Teams LTI) into Blackboard. Since that time, the MS Teams LTI has become increasingly unreliable. Blackboard no longer supports this LTI, and it will be removed from Blackboard in the near future.

For more information, please visit our MS Teams for Teaching Resource page.

New JIPE article: What Promotes and Inhibits Sharing of Learning Designs? Teachers’ Perspectives - Posted on May 21, 2024

A man holding a book speaks to people sitting at desks.

Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) is pleased to announce the publication of “What Promotes and Inhibits Sharing of Learning Designs? Teachers’ Perspectives” by Verner Larsen, PhD, Lisbeth Lunde Frederiksen, PhD, and Thomas Iskov, PhD.

Abstract:

This article contributes to the research on learning design by examining the collaborative practices among teachers in professional education. The focus extends beyond classroom activities to encompass the sharing and exchange of diverse knowledge, experience and teaching materials. By drawing from experience at a Danish university college, the article emphasizes the need to move beyond the limitations of highly regulated top-down teaching formats. Through the exploration of four selected empirical cases, it highlights the qualifying aspects of sharing practices as perceived by teachers. The article sheds light on the significance of sharing from the teacher’s viewpoint. It underscores the importance of pedagogical autonomy and the discretion of individual teachers supported by a sharing culture where educators are expected to make their materials available to others but also benefit from the resources of others in the community. By combining top-down/bottom-up strategies with degrees of formality, the article shows how both strategies can take place in sharing practices in the same organization and still generate pedagogical autonomy as long as a low degree of formality is maintained.

SFQ Season - What to Anticipate in Summer 2024 - Posted on May 16, 2024

Posted:
May 16, 2024

The Student Feedback Questionnaire (SFQ) invites students to provide anonymous feedback on their learning experience in support of our shared commitment to ensuring the quality of our students’ learning experiences at Humber. SFQs run every semester.

SFQ dates are dependent on the length of a course, opening to students about 70 per cent of the way through the class and closing before the last week of classes.

This semester, two common timelines for SFQ Season are:

  • 14-week courses: weeks 10 to 13
  • Seven-week courses: weeks 5 to 6

You can find the dates for a specific course using our SFQ Date Tool

Instructors and students will receive reminders about SFQs via email and the messaging tool in Blackboard.

Please watch Communiqué for SFQ updates and visit the Innovative Learning website to learn more. Need additional help? Contact us in the IL Support Centre.

Staffing Announcement: AVP Recruitment and Student Mobility - Posted on April 12, 2024

Posted:
April 12, 2024

I am pleased to announce that following a very competitive selection process, Amber Holliday has accepted the new role of Associate Vice-President, Recruitment and Student Mobility.

This position, reporting to the Vice-President Students and Institutional Planning, will provide leadership to all aspects of domestic and domestically-based recruitment, through participation in development and approval of related marketing strategies and co-leadership of the college’s Marketing, Recruitment and Conversion Committee. In addition, Amber will provide leadership to college Pathways and Transfer (Student Mobility) activities in cooperation with the Academic Division and Registrar’s Office.

Amber joins us from York University where she most recently served as the Director, CRM Transformation in York’s Student Systems Renewal Program – a technological program designed to move the university towards next generation solutions improving the experience of students, faculty and staff. As Director, she spearheaded the comprehensive business and technological transformation of York’s CRM to a system designed to leverage data to improve relationships, drive enrolment growth and increase retention.  The first release of the new CRM went live in September 2023. Amber will be an asset to the Humber Enrolment team as we continue with implementation of the Enrolment and Admissions Rethinking Project.

With more than two decades of progressive leadership in recruitment and admissions, Amber is dedicated to fostering a student-centric experience at all stages of the student enrolment journey. As Assistant Director, Student Recruitment at York University, she assumed a leadership position that proved instrumental in diversifying the student body and driving enrolment growth nationally and internationally. This included the creation of integrated recruitment strategies, most notably with York’s English Language Institute, designed to support institutional and program specific priorities, optimize tactics and processes, and foster cross-campus collaboration. She also led the restructuring of the recruitment team for greater market accountability and cross-campus partnership.

Amber has an M.Ed from York University with a focus on internationalization and the international student experience, and is a certified ProSci change practitioner. She looks forward to joining the Humber community!

Please join me in congratulating Amber and wishing her success, when she starts her new role on May 6, 2024.

  • The creation of two Academic Integrity Modules, one for the University of Guelph-Humber (1,000+ completions) and one for Humber (embedded in 129 courses), to support students in their academic journeys.
  • The Equity & Inclusion Hub, which profiles EDIB work of the library across collections, services, physical and virtual spaces, policies, events, and team engagement.

Alexandra joined Humber in 2009 as a librarian supporting the then Business School. Twelve of her fourteen years at the College have been in library leadership roles, starting with the Lakeshore Library Coordinator position and progressing to her current role as Associate Director, Curriculum & Learning. Alexandra’s portfolio has included research and digital literacies, eLearning, copyright, course resources and ereserves, facilities and operations, assessment, and quality assurance. In addition to her library experience, Alexandra has worked in executive search and public relations. Her educational credentials include a Bachelor of Commerce, a Bachelor of Arts (English), a Master of Arts (Communications), and a Master of Information Studies.

Please join me in congratulating Alexandra on her new role, which starts December 11, 2023.

After 34 years of outstanding service, Mary Alexander has decided to retire at the end of December.

Mary joined Humber in 1989 and has been a dedicated and valuable member of the Office of the Registrar ever since. Over the years, Mary has exemplified professionalism, commitment, and tireless work ethic – working almost every convocation ceremony since June 1990! Known as “the lady at the back of the hall”, Mary has been a pillar to the convocation ceremonies and many other RO initiatives, including, her favourite event, the RO holiday party.

Given how many events Mary has had to organize, and the fact she does not like cake (?), she has requested that we do not host a retirement party. Mary has some vacation planned between now and the end of December however, so please take the chance to wish Mary well when you see her around.

As Mary embarks on this new chapter, we want to express our deepest gratitude for the hard work and dedication she has brought to Humber. If you would like to contribute a message or memory, we do have a retirement book available for signing. If you would like to sign Mary’s retirement book, please visit the Office of the Registrar at the North Campus (LRC, first floor) and connect with sheena.persaud@humber.ca or tanya.reda@humber.ca.

Mary, thank you, for your years of service to Humber. Your presence will be greatly missed. We wish you a happy and healthy retirement filled with joy, relaxation, and tropical adventures. May your retirement be as fulfilling as your career has been.

Congratulations!

Barbara Riach and the RO team

As the recipient of the 2008 Support Staff Distinguished Service Award, Maria helped develop and enrich the library’s media collection, and she contributed to various library and college initiatives over her 35-year career.

Her listening skills, calm approach, professionalism, and understanding of user needs are well known across the college.
