College Council Highlights: December 2019

The Humber College Council (HCC) held its second meeting of the 2019-2020 academic year on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at the North Campus. To ensure the Humber community is informed of upcoming events, new initiatives, and important issues, the College Council reports the highlights of its meetings. University Of Guelph-Humber: Institutional Quality Assurance Process (IQAP)

Nikki Martyn [Program Head, University of Guelph-Humber] and John Walsh [Vice-Provost and Chief Academic Officer, University of Guelph-Humber] provided an overview of strategies, operational priorities and initiatives, internationalization and program development. N. Martyn noted that the defining characteristics of University of Guelph-Humber are the double credentials, work experiential learning, average sized classes, study abroad opportunities and undergraduate research.

Strategic Enrolment Management/Academic Calendar/Enrolment

Gina Antonacci [Associate Vice-President, Academic] and Barb Riach [Associate Vice-President, Enrolment Management and Registrar] provided updates on Strategic Enrolment Management structure (SEM), and the 2020-2021 Academic Calendar. B. Riach noted that the new SEM structure will be taking place in January 2020. B. Riach also reviewed the financial deregistration and reinstatement process. Feedback on the 7-1-7 academic structure was provided by Council members.

  • According to the members, there was positive feedback from students, staff and faculty regarding the implementation of the 7-1-7 academic structure.
  • It was noted that this new structure provides consistency and allows students to participate in other activities to improve their mental health and financial well-being.
  • With the new structure, faculty were able to plan in advance, engage in meetings and attend professional development activities.
  • It was suggested that tests be conducted before the reading week to allow for an easier transition to the second half of the semester.

Arboretum Strategic Plan

Alexandra Link [Director, Humber Arboretum and Urban Ecology] provided an overview of the Humber Arboretum and Centre for Urban Ecology Strategic Plan 2019-2024. A. Link highlighted the vision, mission, strategic priorities, and strategic initiatives.

Ernestine’s Shelter and College Council Fundraiser

Amy Azzopardi [Faculty of Health Sciences & Wellness] and Lisa Ta [Humber College Student] provided an overview of the Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter. A. Azzopardi noted that the Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter is an organization run by women, providing support and shelter for women and children escaping violence. A. Azzopardi noted that the Humber College community generously donated gifts and swag for the College Council fundraiser.
