Acquiring Gender Intelligence: A Strategy for Preventing Gender-Based Violence

This 90-minute workshop aims to increase self- and collective- awareness of how gender norms and social constructs of masculinity can inflict harm on oneself and others. Participants will get equipped with the knowledge and effective strategies to challenge the links between gender-based violence and masculinity.

Upon the completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the process of gender socialization and how gender norms and stereotypes shape the view and attitudes for people of all genders and ages.
  • Be able to challenge unacceptable gender norms and practice that enable sexualized and gender-based violence.
  • Reflect critically on individual and societal ideas of femininity, masculinity and what it means to “be a man” and assess how these ideas contribute to or impede diversity, inclusion, and equity in the college community.
  • Assess opportunities and effective approaches to create healthy and non-violent masculinities, which in turn can lead to more equitable, respectful and non-violent relations in the communities.
  • Increase their empathy for survivors of sexualizedand gender-based violence.
  • Gain knowledge of resources available to those who have been affected by sexual and gender-based violence.

About the facilitator

Trevoh Mayoh from Next Gen Men, is a disruptive diversity, inclusion and violence prevention consultant who focuses on transformative projects around the world. Trevor works with government and corporate partners on deconstructing gender norms and creating innovative violence prevention programming. He possesses unique expertise from working with professional sports, hospitality, technology, extractive and post-secondary organizations internally and externally to help foster more inclusive, safe and successful environments.
