Humber’s Board of Governors Approves 2023-24 Budget and Business Plan

To the Humber Community,

I am pleased to report that the Humber Board of Governors recently approved the proposed 2023-2024 budget and business plan.

This past fiscal year, the college’s budget and business plan were focused on post-pandemic recovery and supporting evolution of a more flexible and hybrid working and learning environment at Humber. Now, with the completed return to in-person activities, we are able to focus on creating the best possible experiences for our students online and on campus.

Planning for 2023-2024

Many of the initiatives in the 2023-2024 Business Plan stem from the Academic and Digital Campus Plans and reflect our promise to create an exceptional student experience.

The Business Plan goals focus on two major areas:

  • Teaching and Learning Excellence
    • Providing students with cutting-edge knowledge through innovation teaching and learning techniques
    • Offering expanded program offerings and services
    • Providing flexible learning through a wide array of credentials and pathways as well as work-integrated learning experience to succeed in an evolving workplace.
  • Exceptional Student Experience
    • Building the organizational culture and infrastructure that nourishes student success and learners’ ability to thrive, through the offering of accessible, inclusive, heathy, sustainable and technologically advanced campuses and online learning environments
    • Embedding equity, diversity, inclusion as well as Indigenous ways of being and doing into all approaches.

Planning Context for the 2023-2024 Budget

Since 2020, Humber has continued to experience impacts on operations and academic delivery due to changing learner preferences, economic and labour market conditions and the effects of COVID-19. For fiscal year 2023-24, the College anticipates that overall enrolment will increase and surpass pre-pandemic levels. This is largely due to growth in international students, while continued pressure is felt system-wide in the domestic market as a result of a strong labour market and demographic trends.

The new budget supports the College’s goals and objectives and clearly demonstrates that Humber remains financially sound and committed to the principles of fiscal management and sustainability. We continue to invest in major capital projects including the construction of the Humber Cultural Hub and the expansion of the Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology.

The full Business Plan for 2023-2024 is now posted and I encourage everyone in the Humber community to read and discuss them with their teams.

This is the first Business Plan and Budget of my tenure at Humber, and I believe they lay out exciting and ambitious initiatives that will continue to strengthen our global, polytechnic leadership.

Envisioning our Future

This year marks the end of the 2018-2023 Strategic Plan and the start of a new chapter at Humber. In the coming year, we will be engaging the Humber community and our partners to create our 2030 vision for transformative and socially engaged post-secondary education. We will have more to share about the Humber Inspired process in the coming weeks, including how you can contribute to the discussion.

I know whether we’re talking about today or ten years from now, we will continue to be focused on providing learners with high-quality programs and work-integrated learning that sets them up for success today and tomorrow. We will offer outstanding and innovative programs and services and foster an equitable, inclusive, healthy and sustainable college.

Every day, I am impressed by the commitment and dedication that each of you demonstrates in your work, in supporting our learners and each other. With a new roadmap in hand for the coming fiscal year and a focus on co-creating the vision for the future of polytechnic education at Humber and in Canada, I know that we will continue to achieve great things together.

Thank you for all that you do.
