Accommodating Alternative Assessments for Presentations

An ALS Accommodation Letter may indicate an alternative assessment be provided for presentations for a variety of reasons based on the impact of the disability. When this accommodation is listed on the letter, we encourage faculty to consider the following approach:

  • Review the course learning outcomes.
  • Determine essential requirements associated with the assessment and how they connect with the overall learning outcomes for the course.
  • Determine how the selection of an oral presentation as the format for the assessment is connected to the learning outcome(s). Can the learning outcomes be met by use of an alternative format assessment?
  • If the learning outcome(s) can be met through use of a different assessment format, provide that as an option for the learner. Ensure the learner is provided sufficient time to complete the assessment once it is provided to them.
  • In some cases, faculty have accommodated learners may be able to one-to-one with faculty or record themselves speaking and submit a video.
  • When an alternative assessment has been identified, consider providing all learners with the option to select either of the two assessments. This approach is a Universal Design for Learning best practice.
