Application for Academic Employees - Professional Development Leave

APPLICATION for ACADEMIC EMPLOYEES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LEAVE (SABBATICAL) for the academic year 2026-2027

Professional Development Leave (CA, Article 20) permits a limited number of academic employees to pursue College-approved academic, administrative, technical, industrial or other activities where such activities will enhance the knowledge and skills of the teacher, counsellor or librarian upon returning to the College.

Activities during a Leave can include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of new professional or technical skills through practical experience to reflect changes in the workforce;
  • Development of materials such as text, software, and visual materials required of a specific course or courses;
  • Retraining for skills required in a different department of the College or to teach in another discipline;
  • Instructional, individual or directed research related to an identified need; and
  • Completion of formal academic studies.

  1. Submit Application – Complete and submit the Professional Development Leave application form (Appendix A) to your immediate supervisor by November 3, 2025.
  2. Supervisor Meeting and Sign-Off- Meet with your immediate supervisor to discuss the application/proposal. Ensure the Dean/Director has signed off on the application by November 17, 2025.
  3. Forwarding Applications – All completed applications must be forwarded to the Office of the Senior Vice-President, Academic, c/o sana.mahmood@humber.ca by November 17, 2025. Applications will be reviewed and rank-ordered by seniority, in accordance with the Academic Employees Collective Agreement. A confirmation letter will be sent to applicants upon receipt.
  4. Recommendation for Approval - The Senior Vice President, Academic will recommend approval of rank-ordered Leave requests to the President.
  5. Final Approval and Notification - The President will approve the Leave requests and notify People(s) & Culture of the employees who have been approved for a Leave.
  6. Notification of Approved Leave - The Senior Vice-President will provide written notification to employees who have been granted a Leave, outlining the conditions and expectations to be met during the Leave period.
  7. Acceptance Timeline - Applicant must sign and return the approval letter within 14 calendar days of receipt.
  8. Notification of Denial - The applicant’s supervisor will notify, in writing, those whose Leave request was not approved, including the reasons for the decision.
  9. Union Notification - In accordance with 20.02 (xv), of the Academic Employees Collective Agreement, the College will provide the Union Local with a list of all applicants, as well as the names of those who have been approved for a Leave, including the duration of each approved Leave.
