Adaptive Fitness Tools

The fitness centres at both campuses are equipped some adaptive fitness equipment, including the following:

  • Wheelchair treadmills - Located in Cardio Room at North campus, and on 3rd floor Fitness Centre at Lakeshore Campus.
  • SkiErg extenders - Request from staff at work stations.
  • Adaptive skipping ropes - Request with Fitness Coordinator at North Campus, or with staff on 3rd floor Fitness Centre at Lakeshore Campus.
  • Gripping tools: “Active Hands” are used to assist people with decreased hand function when gripping dumbbells or other training accessories. Located with Fitness Coordintor at North Campus or at the 1st floor front desk Fitness Centre at Lakeshore campus. 

The Lakeshore Fitness Centre also offers wheelchair accessible selectorized weight machines.

Adaptive Recreation: 

Adaptive sports are intended to be inclusive of participants with varying abilities & experience.  Participants with visible or invisible disabilities, physical or cognitive limitations, or vision, speech or hearing impariments & those without, will all participate together in activities that forster inclusion, fair play & fun.  Programs may require the use of special equipment or modified playing rules.  

Equipment currently available for participant use includes:  1 audible indoor soccer ball, 1 goalball, blindfolds, 2 floor curling sets, & 2 sitting volleyball nets.  On special "try it" days, equipment is rented from local partners for participant use including sport wheelchairs & roller sledge hockey equipment.

Our goal is to provide all students with the chance to be included in sports & physical activities on campus by diversifying our programs & services.  If you have an idea for a sport not listed, or if you wish to participate as a program assistant, scorekeeper or game official, please email us at campusrec@humber.ca.
