In the Fall of 2023, Humber College introduced Green Building Standards that mandate sustainability requirements for the various types of construction projects at the institution. These standards contribute to the college's various strategic plans and initiatives, including the Integrated Energy Master Plan and Climate Action Plan's commitment to achieve Net Zero in 2029.
The four Green Building Standards documents can be found for download in the list below. To support an accelerated transition to a decarbonized built environment, the Standards are made publicly available with the hopes that they can inspire and be improved on by others.
The Green Building Standards establish clear deliverables that must be met by the design and construction teams. Sustainability requirements vary according to the size and complexity of projects.
Building N is a 3-storey building housing the applied technology classrooms as well as design, computer and machine laboratories. The building also houses the main campus shipping and receiving areas as well as a data centre.
The renewal project fully replaces the building envelope with an ultra-high performance skin; including triple glazing, R30 effective walls, engineered transitions for superior air control, and many other enhancements. The renewal also revamps the heating and cooling systems to further reduce building energy consumption. The measures are expected to reduce building energy consumption by 30%.

You can add another award to the Humber Cultural Hub’s (HCH) list of accolades after it was recently announced that it was named a 2024 Clean50 Top Project award winner.
Despite being three times the size of the existing A Building at Lakeshore Campus it will replace, the HCH will use the same amount of energy as its predecessor. It’s forgoing fossil fuels for sustainable energy sources to be a net-zero building.

The Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation (Barrett CTI) pioneers a new educational model, focusing on sustainable building practices, automated manufacturing and human-centred solutions for the 21st century. Located at Humber’s North Campus, the 93,000-square-foot facility is a living laboratory that omits traditional classrooms entirely. Interdisciplinary teams of students, faculty, industry partners and community members make use of interactive technology zones, digital media studios, cutting-edge prototyping and maker spaces, interactive demonstration areas and flexible open concept gathering spaces.
