Humber Polytechnic officially opened the Carol Reid Innovation Centre on April 24, 2025, with a heartfelt ribbon-cutting ceremony that honoured the extraordinary legacy of the late Carol Reid – a beloved educator, mentor, and champion of Early Childhood Education.
Friends, colleagues and family gathered at Humber’s North Campus to celebrate Carol’s life and impact on the Humber community. Among them was Carol’s husband, Morry Mcleod, whose generous support helped bring the new space to life.
A proud Humber alumna, Carol began her teaching career at Humber in 1989 and spent 25 years inspiring students with her creativity, passion for learning, and deep commitment to community. She was the driving force behind the original Early Childhood Education Resource Centre – now also named in her honour, creating a space where students could access hands-on materials and resources to enhance their learning and field placements.
Even after her retirement in 2014, Carol continued to shape the program, thanks to her tireless mentorship and the support of colleagues who contributed to maintaining her vision. Today, the newly named Carol Reid Innovation Centre stands as a tribute to her life’s work – a vibrant hub filled with books, toys, puppets, and natural materials that spark curiosity and encourage exploration.
During the ceremony, speakers reflected on Carol’s belief in the power of play, the importance of nurturing young minds, and her unwavering commitment to student success. Morry and Carol’s family were warmly thanked for their generosity in making this space possible, and for helping to ensure her legacy continues to inspire future generations of Early Childhood Educators.
Following the ribbon cutting, guests gathered for a reception where stories were shared, and Carol’s remarkable contributions to education were remembered with warmth and gratitude.
The Centre will continue to serve as a place of inspiration and innovation – a lasting legacy for an educator who gave so much to her students, her colleagues, and her field.
