Gordon L. Goldie, 1925 – 2009, was a fundraising pioneer and helped many clients across Canada run successful campaigns. Gordon worked as both a reporter and editor before he launched Gordon L. Goldie Company Ltd.
In a 1980 Toronto Star interview, Gordon said that a fundraiser “requires a certain amount of presence, which takes time to acquire.” Acquire he did. Over the years, he led some of the biggest fundraising campaigns of his day — at first mainly with clients in the Toronto area, then, as the company expanded, throughout Canada.
Gordon pioneered the idea of undertaking a feasibility study, or planning study, in advance of a campaign and then recruiting well-connected senior executives to make calls on their industry peers to ask for contributions. This approach was radical for its time, but it met with great success and it is now the accepted standard in capital campaign fundraising practice, and is taught to new generations of fundraisers enrolled in the Fundraising Management postgraduate program at Humber College.
George Stanois, the company’s current managing director and owner, established The Gordon L. Goldie Memorial Scholarship at Humber College to honour Gordon’s legacy and help support students on their way to creating meaningful change as fundraising professionals.
