LEARNING SESSION:

Opportunities and Impacts: UDL in Higher Education

Tuesday, August 20, 2024, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a powerful framework for post-secondary educators to use when designing learning experiences. From service delivery to curriculum development, from leadership decisions to classroom teaching, the post-secondary environment offers a unique ecosystem for UDL to flourish.

In this keynote address, Jodie Black will explore the opportunities and broad impacts of UDL in higher educational institutions such as Humber College. She will engage in dialogue with the Humber community that encourages a thoughtful discussion on structures, supports and practices needed to fully integrate the UDL framework into practice. Throughout this session, Jodie will encourage attendees to reflect on current teaching and learning practices, pose questions aimed at critically evaluating the potential integration of a UDL framework, and facilitate interactive discussions to foster reflective insights into the integration of UDL.

SPEAKER: Professor Jodie Black

Dwayne Matthews

Jodie Black (M.Ed., B.Ed. B.A.) helps post-secondary educators use Universal Design for Learning to improve learning, teaching, and working for all. She is co-author of the book, “UDL Navigators in Higher Education: A Field Guide” and co-creator of the Universal Design for Learning Higher Education Network, the first international network of UDL professionals in higher education.

She started her higher education career at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) in 2008, and led the province’s first post-secondary UDL initiative combining grassroots efforts with organizational strategy to support sustainable UDL work at NSCC. After NSCC, she joined Fleming College in Peterborough where she works as a Teaching and Learning Specialist and helps faculty integrate UDL into their curriculum and teaching practices.

Throughout that time, she has worked the front lines and behind the scenes, taught in the classroom and worked with Accessibility Services, been at leadership tables and supported students. It’s allowed her to understand UDL from a systems perspective and deepen her appreciation that we are all learners.
