SoTL

What is SoTL?

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) takes a reflective, research-based approach to improving teaching and learning. It systematically explores how teaching practices impact student learning, encourages the open sharing of results, and fosters collaboration across disciplines to enhance education together.

SoTL at Humber

SoTL at Humber is active, vibrant, and ever-expanding as faculty and staff continue to explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning across the polytechnic. Check out the articles and videos below to explore the work of our community.

Getting Started

SoTL research usually starts with a question, often about something in your classroom or teaching practice. Maybe a question that will capture the impact of an intervention/practice, or a question about what might improve with a learning outcome. Once you have a question, then you can start planning your research to answer your question.

How We Can Help

If you are interested in doing SoTL at Humber we would be happy to support. The SoTL team can meet with you to help you plan your research at any stage, from ideation to dissemination (Siobhan.williams@humber.ca).

JIPE

If you’re looking for somewhere to publish your article, the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) might be a good option.

Humber Research Ethics Board (REB)

Research involving human participants needs REB approval before launching. Most SoTL projects do require REB approval. For more information please visit the Humber REB website.
