Humber Faculty Receives MITACS Grant for the Research and Development of Drowsiness Detection Systems

Humber College’s team of faculty members from FMCA and FAST, including Dr. Dennis L. Kappen, Dr. Maryam Davoudpour, Professor George Paravantes, and Dr. Patrick Burke, in collaboration with Dr. Azadeh Yadollahi from the University of Toronto and Dr. Behrang Keshavarz from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), has been awarded a prestigious MITACS Grant.

The industry partner is Vee Canada, an international corporation known for technology integration. This funding will support their innovative research into the challenges of long-haul workers' fatigue and drowsiness in the healthcare, manufacturing, and transportation sectors. This project also establishes a collaboration between crossfunctional disciplines such as industrial design, interaction design, computer systems engineering and biomedical engineering across academic institutions.

The research team will focus on developing advanced systems capable of predicting and providing early warnings of fatigue and drowsiness in workers, to enhance safety and productivity in these critical industries.

This marks a significant achievement for Humber College, it is the institution's first MITACS Grant.
