Important Information About Hiring Students on Campus

Are you a Humber department or Humber staff on campus who hires student employees? If so, there are some important terms to understand.

When hiring a student, they can be employed as either a Work Study employee or a Non Work Study employee. What's the difference?

The Work Study Program

The Work Study (W.S.) Program is a government and Humber funded program that provides eligible domestic students with the opportunity to develop transferable skills through paid work on campus. The Work Study Program is needs-based, and Humber College students can apply for Work Study approval through the humber.ca/myhumber Bursary application. Guelph-Humber students applying for student jobs at Humber can visit the Academic and Career Success Centre in LRC – 1st floor for more information.

Work Study Program Eligibility Criteria

To participate in the program, students must:

  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be a Domestic student currently enrolled in studies (Canadian citizen, Protected Person, or Permanent Resident)
  • Be a full-time student under OSAP's definitions (For most students, this means a minimum 60% course load; or 40% course load if registered with Accessible Learning Services)
  • Maintain good academic standing in a ministry-approved post-secondary program
  • Have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Non Work Study Eligible Students

Students who do not meet the Work Study Program eligibility requirements (stated above) typically fall into the following student groups:

  • International Students (who are not Protected Persons)
  • Students enrolled in the following program credentials:
    • Certificate of Participation
    • Certificate of Completion
    • Certificate of Achievement (includes Apprenticeship Programs)
    • Professional Certificate
    • Academic Upgrading

As a best practice, it is encouraged that hiring managers work to set aside some funding in the PT Support Account to hire Non Work Study eligible students.
