It is with bittersweetness we announce, that after 45 years of service at Humber College, the H-Drive has put in its paperwork to retire as of June 29, 2022.
The H-Drive has worked under all Humber Presidents; an achievement that not many can claim. Back in 1977, when the H-drive was just the idea of personal storage in the form of floppy disks, it was part of a very small ITS team. Over the years, that team has grown to over one hundred employees. Throughout that time, the H-Drive evolved to become a reliable source of networked file storage.
In 2017, H-Drive took on an apprentice/partner named OneDrive. OneDrive brought emerging technologies to Humber College in the form of cloud storage. The cloud comes with many benefits like the ability to share files, co-authoring, version history and perhaps one of its strongest advantages – portability. OneDrive also allocated substantially more storage space with each client having 1TB of space, as opposed to the 500MB that H-Drive offered.
For the last few years, H-Drive and OneDrive worked in parallel. Once H-Drive recognized that OneDrive had so many advantages, it knew the time to pass the baton had arrived.
So, we bid a fond farewell to our beloved H-Drive. As of June 29, 2022, the H-Drive will no longer be available. H-Drive requested no party or fanfare but did ask that everyone move their files/folders to their OneDrive long before June 29, 2022.
Departmental training will be available to help with the transition, so stay tuned. You can also contact the IT Support Centre at 416.675.6622 x8888, or chat at humber.ca/techtalk, or sign up for 1:1 Virtual Coaching for OneDrive.
