Help students gain valuable real-world experience in artificial intelligence with machine learning while they help you.

Humber College recently introduced a new Graduate Certificate program in “AI with Machine Learning” within the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology. This field is accelerating, with discussions about AI and machine learning seemingly everywhere, making the program even more valuable to students interested in this world-changing arena.

Work-integrated learning gives students the opportunity to apply in-demand skills and knowledge to real-world scenarios and is a key component of a Humber education. The AI and ML Graduate Certificate program is seeking industry sponsors within the College to supervise student capstone projects - there is no remuneration required for students. Each capstone is an industry project comprised of a team of four students in their final semesters of the Artificial Intelligence with Machine Learning Graduate Certificate Program.

The next round of capstone projects will begin in January 2024. Potential project applications could include:

  • Student experience
  1. Data Analysis
  2. Forecasting
  3. Productivity
  4. Image recognition
  5. Marketing Strategies
  6. Cyber Security

Starting July 18, 2023

To accommodate Humber Cultural Hub (HCH) construction taking place this summer, the Lakeshore Library will be closed for at least four weeks starting July 18, 2023. The health and safety of students and staff, as well as the student experience given the noise expected, were key considerations when deciding how to accommodate the necessary construction.

Research Help: The Lakeshore Library team will be available for in-person research help at the Lakeshore Learning Commons Help Desk, located in L1000, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Virtual research help continues to be available via chat/textemail, and by appointment.

Learning Resources: Many required print textbooks for courses running this summer will be available. Please email libcirc@humber.ca for details. The library’s extensive virtual collections remain available 24/7 via our website.

Lakeshore Study Spaces: The Lakeshore Learning Commons remains open for study with access to computers and printers.

On behalf of the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre and the 2SLGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group (ERG), we want to say thank you to everyone who celebrated Pride Month with us this year. We were thrilled to have witnessed enormous support and engagement in celebrating Queer joy! 

We also want to thank those who took time to decorate their personal and Humber office spaces for our Display Your Pride contest. We had many lovely submissions but are very excited to congratulate our two winners:

  2. Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology Office

Pride Month was a huge success, however, it is critical to remember that our support of 2SLGBTQIA+ community is needed 365 days of the year.  Pride month is also an important reminder that allyship is a never-ending journey of self-reflection and openness to the feedback and new perspectives from the community. We hope you all continue to grow in your aspiring ally journey and we look forward to continued partnerships and events that support the Humber 2SLBGTQIA+ community.

Humber College faculty members strive to provide students with the best learning experience to keep up with today’s ever-changing technology and innovation landscape. Case in point, the "Incorporation Of Emerging Technologies Into The Classroom" initiative.

David Neumann, a professor at Humber’s Faculty of Media & Creative Arts, received applied research funding to set afloat this seed project that aims to explore the process, technology requirements, and pedagogical considerations needed to sustainably incorporate emerging technologies such as augmented and virtual reality into the curriculum.

As part of this project, David teamed up with Chef Kenneth Ku and a few Humber students to merge 3D printing technology with Humber’s Baking and Pastry arts program.

On Thursday, July 20 at 8 a.m. ET, Panopto will require Panopto for Mac users to be upgraded to version 13.0.

Panopto for Mac 13.0 will require at least macOS 11 or newer. Learn more about supported versions for Panopto for Mac. Panopto will continue to support Panopto for Windows and Remote Recorder version 12.0 until July 2024.

Students will be extras in a BBC production being filmed on August 15th and 16th at North Campus. The production, currently titled The Spaces That Shape Us, is being produced by the BBC in collaboration with Humber and Siemens Canada. Students are asked to commit to one or two days of filming to portray students in various scenes. Memorizing lines or doing cartwheels are not required!

Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) is pleased to announce the publication of Indsights: A Window into the Indigenous Economy by Audrey Wubbenhorst, James Henebry and Patrycja Szkudlarek.

Abstract:

In 2020, Indsights: A Window into the Indigenous Economy began as a collaboration between the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) and Humber College. The purpose is to highlight the contributions of Indigenous peoples to the economy through open educational resources in the form of case studies. Indigenous business owners are invited to participate in a qualitative interview to discuss their entrepreneurial journeys, which are then developed into multimedia case studies. Each entrepreneur plays an active role in the creation of their respective study and has the opportunity to provide feedback and input. Indsights aims to publish 15 case studies online, each including an interview video, written component, and teaching notes. In doing so, this initiative offers learners a wealth of accessible online resources filling a gap in available content on Indigenous entrepreneurs.

Hello Humber community, 

I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Daniel Bear will be moving into the role of Director of the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) commencing Monday, August 21, 2023.

Daniel started at Humber in 2015 as a professor in the Bachelor of Social Science, Criminal Justice program. Beyond being an engaging professor in the classroom, he is also a funded researcher who focuses on drug policy, with an emphasis on both cannabis and harm reduction and the policing of drugs and community policing practices. Daniel is the Canadian lead for the Global Cannabis Cultivation Research Consortium, a group of researchers from 18 countries studying small-scale cannabis cultivation. He currently is the Principal Investigator (PI) on two funded research projects, an NSERC-funded project titled “Engaging and Education Young-Adult Cannabis 2.0 Consumers”, as well as a recently funded ATRP grant entitled “Development of a Data-Driven Human-Centered Design Process for Cannabis Education for Pharmacists”. Many of you would have engaged with this research during the CSI workshops we held in the spring.  

Daniel holds a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a Master of Science (Social Policy Research), and a PhD in Social Policy both from The London School of Economics and Political Science. 

In January 2023, Daniel took on the role of Coordinator, Faculty Initiatives in Social Innovation in the FSCS. In this role, he focused on strategies and approaches to develop processes and opportunities for the engagement of all members of FSCS to continue to build our internal capacity to support the work of the CSI. In the Director role, Daniel will work collaboratively with the FSCS administration team, the CSI Steering Committee, Advisory Committee, and the COI Network leadership team to meet the collaborative goals of the Centre.
