The GH Biowall in the lobby of the GH building was the first large scale installation in Ontario, and remains one of the largest ever built. But at almost 20 years old, the wall needs extensive infrastructure refurbishment.

Work has commenced with the wall expected to be returned to its former beauty by November 2022.

Humber College has partnered with New Earth Solutions, an organization with extensive experience in biowall repairs, refurbishment and maintenance.

Major activities include:

  • removal of old plants and growing media
  • infrastructure repairs and upgrades including new ABS air plenum
  • installation of new plants (5,077 tropical plants consisting of over 15 species)

Once complete, the new biowall will occupy four storeys of wall space and will once again proudly grace over the University of Guelph-Humber atrium.

This month, we are putting the Sustainability Spotlight on June MacDonald-Jenkins, senior dean, Faculty of Social and Community Services and principal of Lakeshore Campus.

June is an active member of the Humber community and can often be found spearheading projects like the Bin-Less campaign or even helping Gardens Lakeshore with planting.

I am happy to announce that Michael Avis has joined the Innovative Learning team in the role of Educational Developer, Teaching Excellence. 

In this full-time faculty position, Michael will provide leadership and expertise in educational development initiatives to support Humber’s professors in the creation of curriculum design and delivery.  

Michael comes to Humber with more than 20 years’ experience in pedagogy and andragogy. Some of his areas of academic and professional expertise include: immersive technology, UDL, curriculum development, and anti-racism and equity informed teaching. He is an experienced college faculty, innovator and educator.

Self-Service Password Frequently Asked Questions

Passwords prevent unauthorized access of user accounts and Humber’s network in general. Passwords should be easy to remember but hard to guess. With Humber’s self-service password tool, recovering a forgotten or resetting a compromised password has never been easier!  

Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) enables you to safely manage your own password and reset without the need of submitting a ticket with the ITS Service Desk — giving you more control to reset your password anywhere and anytime easily and quickly. 

Below are some frequently asked questions to help you understand the self-service password reset tool. 

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

  1. What is self-service password reset (SSPR)? Self-Service Password Reset is a password reset tool that enables users to reset their passwords without the need to contact IT staff for help. Users can easily reset and manage their passwords themselves and continue working no matter where they are or time of day.  
  2. How do I use/access SSPR / Reset my password? You can access the SSPR tool by visiting myaccount.humber.ca and clicking ‘change password’. You can reset your password simply by clicking the ‘forgot my password’ link on any Humber login page. 
  3. Why now? Information Technology Services rolled out SSPR along with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) last summer 2021. As of August 1, 2022 ‘mypassword.humber.ca’ will be decommissioned. After that date users can manage and recover their password by accessing myaccount.humber.ca.
  4. Do I need to register for this? No, you do not. SSPR is a feature of Multi-Factor Authentication, which was rolled out to Humber College staff and faculty last summer. 
  5. What are the benefits of self-service password reset? 
    • Secure – Protection against unauthorized users, keeps your information confidential and secure 
    • Convenient - Easily change your password anywhere, anytime without having to contact IT support 
    • Intuitive user experience - SSPR provides an intuitive one-time user registration process that allows users to reset passwords and unblock accounts on-demand, which allows users to get back to work faster and be more productive.

Lake Shore Blvd West and Kipling - Track Renewal 2022

What we are doing and why

The City and TTC are in the process of replacing the streetcar tracks at the intersection of Lake Shore Boulevard West and Kipling Avenue. Preliminary prep work at the intersection has already begun. To complete this portion of the project, there will be a full intersection closure of Lake Shore Boulevard West and Kipling Avenue starting Monday, July 25 until Monday, August 1.

TTC rail delivery and storage

As part of track renewal projects, equipment and materials are stored close to the site. Rail panels will be delivered to the area on flatbed trailers starting July 20, 2022. For a short period of time prior to being installed, TTC will store rail panels in the centre lanes at the following locations:

  • two flatbed trailers on Lake Shore east of Kipling
  • two on Lake Shore west of Kipling
  • three to four on Kipling north of Lake Shore

The flat bed trailers will be removed from site as the track work and new rail installation progresses over the course of the project.

Work hours – some night activity

Periods of around-the-clock work during rail installation by TTC is required to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete and support the daytime work. Overnight rail work by TTC may consist of moving new rail into position, rail installation and rail welding/grinding.

Join the Butterfly Effect Challenge this summer!

The Butterfly Effect Challenge is open for your submissions. We’re looking for frugal, out-of-the-box or simple solutions that save resources or reduce manual work.

Humber’s quarterly research and innovation magazine SPARK Issue #4 is out now!

SPARK Issue #4 shines the spotlight on three interdisciplinary initiatives from Humber’s Visual & Digital Arts, Baking & Pastry Arts, and Fashion Management programs. From integrating AR/VR in the curriculum to using 3D printing technology to collaborating with global partner institutions, Humber faculty members, researchers and students are transforming their sparks of curiosity into classroom projects that further help students gain a competitive edge in the workforce of the 21st century.

SPARK features a foreword from Dianna Dinevksi, associate dean, Research & Development, and an editor’s note from Anju Kakkar, managing editor, Humber Press, Research & Innovation who welcomes you into the world of research and innovation through stories.

The new SPARK issue also spotlights “A Study on Skills Gap: Beyond COVID”—a research study led by Barath Roy Michel, senior project manager, Office of Research & Innovation, whose insights have been highlighted in the BBC article, "What ‘upskilling’ means for the future of work." The research study was published in the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) Vol. 4 No. 1.

Are you getting questions about registration? 

The International Centre is hosting a series of "How to Register" virtual workshops designed specifically for international students. The workshop will last one-hour and will consist of a half-hour presentation and then a Q&A session. The workshop will answer commonly asked questions such as "Why do I have a study permit hold?" and "When can I register?".

We encourage you to send this to any International student who would like more registration information and have their questions answered.
