Please note there will be an external film shoot taking place at the North Campus from August 18 to 23, 2022.

From August 18 to 20, there will be a large crew prepping the following filming areas between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.:

  • Exterior Barrett CTI building
  • 1st, 2nd and 5th floors of the Barrett CTI building

On August 22, filming will take place between 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the following areas:

  • Exterior Barrett CTI building
  • 1st, 2nd and 5th floors of the Barrett CTI building

On August 23, the film crew will wrap up in all areas of the Barrett CTI building between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

*Please note: Lot #4 will be sectioned off for the film crew. 

Public Safety Security has been arranged to be with this film crew at all times while they are on Humber property.

The Butterfly Effect Challenge: Inclusive Innovation

Do you like repetitive tasks or using excess resources? Neither do we. Have you found a simple, clever solution to reduce manual labour or ways to be more resource-efficient? Then, we invite you to share your solution with us in the Butterfly Effect (BE) Challenge!

The BE Challenge (organized by Humber’s Office of Research and Innovation, ORI) invites Humber administrative and support staff to submit their smart solutions that save resources or streamline work.

If you’ve already implemented simple, low-cost or no-cost integration and/or automation solutions that improved on-campus or remote work arrangements, then you might just become a finalist in the BE Challenge! To participate, fill out this simple Qualtrics form to tell us about your solution.

Please be advised that the Test Centres will be closed all day on Thursday, August 18 and Friday, August 19. The Centres remain open for the remainder of this week and next week, and there is significant availability for student bookings at both campuses. If you believe that a student should be writing in our Centres in the coming weeks, please advise them to schedule their test as soon as possible.

As a reminder, for learners to schedule a test in the Test Centres, faculty must first submit their test to Testing Services.

Instructions to upload a test can be found on the Testing Services webpage.

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Erin Mandel-Shorser has been appointed Acting Associate Dean, Biomedical Sciences & Health Regulation within the Faculty of Health Sciences & Wellness.

Initially starting as a part-time faculty member with the University of Guelph-Humber in January 2017, teaching courses in the B.A.Sc Kinesiology program, Erin became a full-time professor and Program Coordinator for our Bachelor of Health Sciences, Workplace Health & Wellness program in August 2017. Prior to Humber, she was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at York University, involved in research, development and testing of pharmaceutical compounds related to diabetes blood glucose management. During this time she taught and mentored laboratory students and assisted in the day-to-day administration of the lab.

Erin holds a PhD in Kinesiology and Health Science from York University, an MSc in Kinesiology and Applied Health Sciences from University of Waterloo, and a BSc in Honours Kinesiology from Western University.

Erin’s science-based background means she is well-positioned to lead the programs in this division, which include: Clinical Research, Regulatory Affairs, Biotechnology, Health Sector Regulatory Compliance, and Pharmacy Technician, as well as the newly approved IPAC and Clinical Informatics graduate certificates launching Fall 2023 and the BSc Biomedical Sciences (approval anticipated later this year).

Please join me in congratulating Erin as she transitions into her new role effective today, August 15, 2022.

Metrolinx is preparing the road for the eventual extension of President’s Way to a new campus entrance on Highway 27 as part of the Finch West LRT project.

North Campus traffic on Arboretum Blvd near Lot 4 between Humber College Blvd and Spruce Vista will be restricted to one lane in each direction from August 22 to 26. This will include shutting down the sidewalk at the intersection of Spruce Vista and Arboretum Blvd on the north side and the sidewalk along Parking Lot 4. While cars will still have access, no pedestrian traffic will have access to walk through Entrance A along Arboretum Blvd.

Details are provided in the enclosed map. Please be prepared for some travel delays during this time.

Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber (Humber) take the safety of our community seriously. As part of that commitment to safety, Humber will reinstate annual Active Attacker drills in September 2022. The drills were postponed during the pandemic.

The goal of these drills is to test our procedures and ensure community members know and understand what to do in the unlikely event of an active threat on any of our campuses or locations. Active Attacker drills take place every year during the third week of September. There is a change in the dates and locations for the drills for 2022. Please see updated information below:  

Tuesday, September 27 10:10 a.m. only North Campus, all buildings including 110 and 30 Carrier Drive. No evening drill.
Friday, September 30 10:10 a.m. International Graduate School. No need for evening drill.
Tuesday, October 4 10:10 a.m. and 7:15 p.m Lakeshore Campus, all buildings (except residence buildings for evening drill).

An announcement will be made using the Public Address system to let community members know immediately before the drill is about to start.

Please note that during the drill, the actual Active Attacker message will be played - not a test message. This is to familiarize the community with the message they would hear during a real incident.

During the drill, community members should follow the Active Attacker Response procedures. Once the drill is complete, an announcement will be made on the Public Address system advising that the drill is over and normal activities can resume. Drills are expected to last between 10 to 15 minutes.

It is important to note that, due to the nature of the drills, some community members may experience stress related issues before, during, or after the drills. Support services are available for students through SWAC and or staff through EAP. Anyone requiring support is encouraged to reach out for the necessary support.

The Active Attacker response procedures can be found on the Department of Public Safety website. Also, look for the Active Attacker Response posters located in classrooms, lecture halls and private meeting spaces across campus.

The online Active Attacker training is also available.

The training is approximately 30 minutes in length. All community members are encouraged to take the training prior to the drills to ensure they know how to properly respond.

Deadline to submit Confirmation of Enrolment to totalrewards@humber.ca is August 31, 2022. Otherwise, your dependent’s access to coverage will be terminated on this date.

Important Information

Coverage for over-age student dependents

As per the benefit plan rules, if you have an over-age dependent who is college or university-bound, you can help prepare them by ensuring that your child is still covered under your group insurance benefits.

As per the benefit plan rules, dependents over the age of 21 (but under age 25) may still be eligible for benefits coverage if they are:

  • full-time postsecondary students and
  • financially dependent on you

What you need to do

  1. Advise Human Resources Total Rewards team by providing a Confirmation of Enrolment letter/document which confirms that your dependent qualifies as an over-age dependent.  A copy of this document can be obtained from the school’s registrar’s office. Otherwise, the dependent child’s claim will be declined.
  2. After you inform the Human Resources Total Rewards team, whenever you submit claims, check “Yes” where it asks you to confirm if your dependent is a full-time student.
  3. When over-age dependents visit the dentist, they can let the dentist know that they are in school full time. This is important because most dentists submit claims electronically.
  4. You can print an extra paper drug card that your over-age dependent can present at the pharmacy. Otherwise, indicate “full-time student” whenever you submit a paper claim form for their drug claims. Note: If the drug card is not used for all the drug purchases, your reimbursement could be affected due to pharmacy mark-ups on the cost of the drugs. This means that you may have to pay more out-of-pocket.
  5. Keep Human Resources Total Rewards team informed of any change in status. Prompt notification of changes in the status of your covered dependents is very important to ensure continued coverage.

Post-secondary school needs proof of coverage

If your over-age dependent’s postsecondary school needs confirmation of your dependent’s benefits coverage, and you use Sun Life’s Plan Members Services website, you can print coverage information that your over-age dependent can give to their school. Sign into Sun Life’s Plan Member Services website. Next, click ‘Profile’, ‘Personal Info’, and then ‘Personal and dependent information'.

Print the page that appears. Your over-age dependent can give it to their school and may receive a refund on their fees.

Coverage for students studying abroad

If your dependent is studying abroad (except in the United States) their benefits coverage may be extended beyond the 60-day limit under the out-of-country coverage. Please contact Human Resources Total Rewards Team for more information and well in advance of the dependent departing Canada (approximately 6-8 weeks before the departure date so the application can be completed, documents are gathered and most importantly, approval can be obtained).

Coverage for overage disabled dependent children

If a child becomes disabled before the limiting age of 21 (or age 25, if a full-time student), coverage will continue, provided:

  • The child is incapable of financial self-support because of a physical or mental disability,
  • The child depends on you for financial support
  • The child is not married, living common-law, or is not in any other formal union recognized by law

To ensure that there is no disruption of benefit coverage, you must provide proof to your Benefit Administrator within, at least, 31 days of the date your child attains the limiting age of 21.  A completed “Disabled Child Coverage” form must be submitted and approved by Sun Life to ensure that coverage continues.  Please contact your Pension and Benefits Specialist of obtain the form.
