Are you interested in getting involved with research but don't know where to start? Perhaps you are a new, emerging or experienced researcher and would like to get involved with something new and collaborative.

The Office of Research & Innovation (ORI) invites interested Humber faculty and staff to participate in a collaborative Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research project.

The group will decide on a study topic based on everyone’s research + teaching and learning interests (it could focus on topics such as gamification, flexible deadlines, student well-being, group work, and public scholarship, for example).

The group will meet regularly in the winter 2023 term to plan the research study. In the fall 2023 term, the research will be implemented, and data will be collected. Data will then be analyzed and written up in the winter of 2024 to submit a publication to the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE).

Please contact Siobhan Williams (siobhan.williams@humber.ca) if you have any questions or would like to join the group. The schedule for meetings will be set in consultation with group members who have noted their interest by December 10, 2022.

For more information on what SoTL is and other opportunities to get involved, please view our Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Handbook.

Research timeline:

  • December 2022/January 2023: find interested faculty/staff to join the group and decide the research's focus. For example, group work (like group writing), gamification, flexible deadlines, etc.
  • Winter/Spring term 2023 (January-June): plan a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) group research study.
  • Fall term 2023 (September-December): Implement the study in classes/collect data.
  • Winter term 2024 (January-June): analyze data and write an article for submission to the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE).

We are aware that the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the union representing Ontario school board workers, has announced their intention to begin a strike on Monday, November 21 if a deal with the provincial government isn’t achieved as of Sunday, November 20.

As of November 18, various School Boards, including Toronto District, Toronto Catholic District, Peel District School Board, York Region District, York Region Catholic District have announced that they would close schools to in-person learning IF a strike occurs on Monday. Some Boards have not yet announced final plans.

As each board’s plans may be different, please check with your local school board to find out what their plans are and how you and your family may be affected.

While Humber classes and operations will continue as scheduled, we understand that employees and students with school-aged children may need to explore childcare options and adjust their regular routines.

For staff whose ability to complete their regular workday either in-person or remotely is affected because of a school closure, please speak to your manager. Faculty members should contact their associate dean.

We know that an interruption to the regular school schedule may be challenging as people make alternative childcare arrangements. Please reach out to your manager/associate dean should you require alternative arrangements for completing your work.

As is the case with missing any class, we will be informing students that they need to contact their professor and are responsible for speaking with them if they need to request alternative arrangements for completing coursework.

Dear Humber employees,

As we approach the holidays, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all members of the Humber community.

Your continued hard work and dedication to our students is inspiring and has contributed to Humber’s success. Since joining Humber College at the end of August, I have had the opportunity to meet many students and employees and I hope to meet many more as time goes on. What has left the deepest impression on me so far is the strong sense of community at Humber and how everyone truly cares for each other's well-being. Thank you for welcoming me so warmly into this caring community.

To recognize your dedication and show our appreciation, the college will officially close for our annual holiday break at the end of the business day on Thursday, December 22. Friday, December 23 is an Employee Appreciation Day, and I hope you will use the time away from the office to enjoy the season with your family and friends. The college will reopen on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

There will be business operations and pay considerations related to this closure and Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness will provide details on how to handle employee scheduling and time entries related to this closure to all managers. Employees can access key payroll calendar dates on this webpage

Thank you again for your dedication and commitment to student success. I wish you the very best this holiday season and look forward to welcoming you back in the new year.
