Enhancing Institutional EDI Knowledge of Disability and Academic Accessibility:

  • ALS’s Best Practice Considerations through the Communiqué focuses on equipping faculty to better support students with disabilities. Where appropriate, ALS encourages students to be actively involved in the accommodation process.

  • For example, students with disabilities connected with ALS are responsible for renewing their Accommodation Letter each semester.

  • Students are also advised to contact faculty to request accommodations in advance of a test or to request an extension.

  • We encourage faculty to actively dialogue with students regarding accommodation requests.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

Information Technology Services has three "operational excellence nights" scheduled for the coming year. During these scheduled nights, most (if not all) technical services will be temporarily unavailable.

Understanding that shutdowns of any kind are inconvenient, they are, nevertheless, necessary so Information Technology Services and its network of partners can carryout critical infrastructure activities on behalf of the Humber community including:

  1. Patching/updating hardware and software assets against security threats to keep Humber's data safe
  2. Testing the organization's business continuity solutions to mitigate against unexpected service interruptions
  3. Optimizing the performance of key business systems to ensure a consistently positive end-user experience

Operational Excellence Nights for this year, as well as the next two years, are as follows:

2023 Dates 2024 Dates 2025 Dates
March 11-12 March 9-10 March 8-9
June 24-25 June 22-23 June 21-22
November 11-12 November 9-10 November 8-9

Each of the scheduled nights will start Saturday evening and carry forward early Sunday morning.

IMPORTANT: Work of an urgent nature may, occasionally, necessitate additional service interruptions. In such cases, Information Technology Services will make every effort to schedule the work (with advance notice) early in the morning, late at night, or over a weekend to minimize the impact to operations.

Poster for Medlife Case Competition

Medlife Movement Case Competition (M2C2) is a two-day case competition for students to gain a global perspective through developing a plan to solve relevant problems in MEDLIFE’s partner communities. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from professionals and community members who are directly affected by this year’s proposed problem: physical barriers to healthcare. The specific problem that the case competition is centered around will be presented on the first day of the conference and participants will be given 12 hours to develop a creative solution with their groups. Participants can choose to register individually for $15, or with a group for $10 per person (minimum of 3 people).

All proceeds from entrance fees will be donated to the MEDLIFE Movement Project Fund to support initiatives in our partner communities.

Participants compete for $800 in cash prizes. A panel of judges will be reviewing each group’s proposals and select three winners. The first place group will win $500, the second place group will win $200, and the third place group will win $100!

Runs March 12-13.

The Staff Lounge Podcast playing on an iPhone

New episode of the Staff Lounge Podcast launches today!

Celebrating International Women's Day, 2022

Women have made great gains in terms of education and schooling over the past few decades. On International Women’s Day, we celebrate these successes.

Despite all that, certain challenges persist: women's employment earnings are on average still lower than men's, and leadership roles can seem elusive. While acknowledging the gains and successes, what remains our greatest challenges for women in leadership roles?

We chat with Dawn Macaulay, Humber College's Dean of Innovative Learning, to discuss what more we can do to support and promote women’s ambitions for leadership roles. For faculty at Humber—who are teaching women who may be just starting out on their careers—what role does mentoring play? What advice is there for women in academic positions with ambitions for leadership roles? And how is leadership being supported?

We’ve heard about the glass ceiling—the invisible barrier to women in business. Ella L.J. Bell Smith coined the phrase "the concrete wall," a different kind of barrier for women of colour where nobody sees you, a barrier that limits the capacity to learn and understand what’s happening on the other side.

Wendy Cyrus-Herdon, Journalism, 1997
Shana King, Fashion Arts, 2000
Tae Hislop, Creative Photography, 2000

Humber Galleries is excited to announce its participation in this year’s CONTACT Photography Festival. Open to all Humber College and University of Guelph-Humber students, faculty, staff, and alumni, artists are welcome to include photography submissions as part of a themed exhibition called How to Remember for the Future.

This exhibition will explore the documentation of unexpected experiences that affect memories of a certain time and place. As an artist, what does it mean to create with intention in a world whose priorities and environments may no longer be predictable nor sustainable? After observing local and global events, and balancing issues such as gender politics, IBPoC representation, climate change, and public protests, how do artists adapt? And to what extent can these present-day experiences shape their future?

Submissions must be photographic or lens-based but can incorporate other art forms within a photographic medium (ex: collage, archival, painting, literature etc). They can be singular images, as well as triptychs or diptychs. Colour and/or black & white images are welcome.

Applications are due Sunday, April 3, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. EST via an online application form

For more information about the art call and its requirements, please visit Humber Galleries online.

As the Russian regime’s invasion of Ukraine continues, Humber has been working closely with the Ukrainian Students Club and Ukrainian employees, along with Russian students, to identify and implement supports for those in our community who are impacted.

Here are some of the ways in which we are providing support:

  • A Ukrainian Students and Community Meeting to be held on Thursday, March 10 at 10 a.m. at Lakeshore Campus in G Commons. Details will be shared soon.

  • The Humber website has a dedicated page for students impacted by the war which includes a list of counseling and mental health services, available in Ukrainian.

  • A dedicated form for students to connect to Humber resources supported by case managers in Student Affairs.

  • Academic accommodation for impacted students who are unable to return to campus in the Winter term for in-person studies because of the invasion.

  • An elimination of any fees owed to Humber in the current term for registered students. Those fees will be paid by bursary funds immediately.

  • A Support our Students fund for students impacted by the invasion has launched. Details were provided in Communiqué last week.

  • Next week is the tuition deposit deadline for the summer term. Some of our currently enrolled Ukrainian and Russian students have plans to study this summer. Impacted students are not required to pay the deposit by the deadline. Also, there will be no penalty for any late deposit payment. This week we will announce the details of our tuition relief program for impacted students studying in the summer session. The announcement will also include information on a bursary program above the tuition relief program to support living expenses of the impacted students.

  • We will be working on plans to provide similar relief in the fall term for impacted students before fall registration opens.

  • Students living in residence who have a Ukrainian or Russian home address or emergency contact will not be required to move out on April 25. Additional solutions are being explored and will be shared as they are finalized. These students will receive follow up communications this week.

  • A dinner was held for international Ukrainian students living in residence last week. Program Coordinators and faculty members attended as well and students were able to eat Ukrainian home cooked food and sing Ukrainian songs.

  • Students can contact the Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre for support. Same and next-day services may be available for both in-person and virtual appointments.

As a reminder, Humber also provides connections to external support, including:

  • LifeWorks Community Crisis Support Line: The Community Crisis Support Line is open 24/7 and can be reached in Canada at 1-844-751-2133. Individuals will receive professional emotional support and/or referral to community resources. This resource is available to anyone and everyone.

  • Good2Talk (1-866-925-5454) is a 24-hour mental health support for Post-Secondary Students in Ontario

  • Mental health support is available in 60 languages, including Ukrainian and Russian. To use the service, please call the International Student Helpline (KeepMeSafe): 1-844-451-9700

  • Therapy Assist Online

  • Staff may also access Employee Assistance Plan services.

  • ConnexOntario: 1-866-531-2600

Several departments are also working on supports for employees impacted by the invasion. Details will be shared as soon as they are confirmed.

We are grateful for the insights and for those who have shared their lived experiences with us over the past week.
