Dear staff,

I hope you are keeping well.

On Monday, March 7, more in-person learning and related activity will resume on campus.

As we look ahead to March, teams across the college that have been working remotely should be making plans to return to their planned work arrangements as communicated to them by their manager. We look forward to having more staff and students on campus working and learning together.

Throughout the pandemic, Humber has made decisions based on the latest Public Health and government directives, while balancing the needs and health and safety of our students and employees. Thank you for all that you have done to help us navigate these changes as we help students to achieve their goals.

If it has been a while since you have worked on campus, I encourage you to review the resources on the HROE COVID-19 Resources for Employees page

Health and safety are always top priorities at Humber. According to the Reopening Ontario Act, physical distancing is not required in learning spaces in post-secondary institutions. Enhanced personal protective equipment in certain settings, consistent with public health recommendations, will be provided. Humber also monitors and continuously tests the air quality of buildings and spaces on our campuses and ensures that expected standards are adhered to in other leased locations. For more information on health and safety measures on campus visit www.humber.ca/campus-return

The Humber Hybrid video series also provides tips, tricks and best practices for working and meeting in a hybrid working environment.

We look forward to seeing students and staff connect on campus once again, sharing experiences and learning from each other.

Hope to see you soon,

Lori Diduch  Vice-President, Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness

Humber Gives donation poster pink background with hearts

As we celebrate love today – we want to extend lots of love to all of the faculty and staff who have gone that extra mile and made personal donations this academic year to support Humber students, on top of the amazing work they already do day-in and day-out.

Each donation directly supports a deserving student and truly makes a difference in their life.

If you haven’t yet had a chance, you can still show your love to Humber students by making a donation.

All gifts, big and small, truly make an impact. Thank you for showing your Humber heart. You inspire us every day.

Love,

Wanda Boute and Alvina Cassiani, Co-Chairs, Humber Gives

xoxo

The last American slaves lived well into the 20th century.

We often hear that Black people should forget about slavery because it was so long ago. Even if it was 400 + years ago, we should never forget. However, slavery was not that long ago. It was so recent that many of the last slaves lived long enough to be recorded. Listen to the story of a few former slaves. Hughes was a former slave.

Hughes: ... Colored people that's free ought to be awful thankful. And some of them is sorry they are free now. Some of them now would rather be slaves.

Interviewer: Which had you rather be Uncle Fountain?

Hughes: Me? Which I'd rather be ? [interviewer laughs]

Hughes: You know what I'd rather do? If I thought, had any idea, that I'd ever be a slave again, I'd take a gun and just end it all right away. Because you're nothing but a dog. You're not a thing but a dog. Night never comed out, you had nothing to do. Time to cut tobacco, if they want you to cut all night long out in the field, you cut. And if they want you to hang all night long, you hang, hang tobacco. It didn't matter about your tired, being tired. You're afraid to say you're tired. They just, well [voice trails off].

Humber Room Menu February 14 to 17

Grab a friend and join us this week in the Humber Room for à la carte service. Craving broccoli cheddar soup and a homemade pizza? We have that. Maybe you want a salad to start, herbed chicken linguine as your main course and lemon creme brulee for dessert. That's an option, too. Or perhaps you're not too hungry and only want to try our Montreal duck breast. All of this and more are available this week only. Our students are excited to serve you. Walk-ins welcome.

Email jessica.estrela@humber.ca to make a reservation.
