This summer, wildfires will continue to be a cause for concern affecting environmental air quality and potentially people's health.

Environment Canada's Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to fluctuate over the coming months and we encourage the Humber community to regularly check the AQI website and take precautions as needed. This may include reducing or rescheduling strenuous activities outdoors if you experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation.

To help protect yourself from pollutants, a well-fitted respirator-type mask, such as an N-95, is recommended while outdoors during high risk periods.

Humber College continues to monitor AQI and follow guidance from Environment Canada and Toronto Public Health. Humber is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our community.

Stay safe and be well,
Occupational Health and Safety

Humber College’s Community Outreach & Workforce Development (COWD) department in partnership with the Faculty of Applied Science & Technology (FAST) are thrilled to announce the relaunch of an exceptional engineering and architecture program. This tailored program is aimed at supporting new immigrants to secure rewarding employment opportunities in their field in Canada. The Engineering/Architecture Bridging Program for New Canadians is generously funded by The Barrett Family Foundation as part of the Barrett Centre Industry Skills Training and Development Program.

Designed in collaboration with industry and community, the bridging program provides participants with comprehensive technical training, soft skills development, and employment support - all tailored to the specific needs of immigrant engineers, architects, technologists and technicians - in the fields of civil engineering, architecture and mechanical engineering. With the relaunch, the program has been updated to reflect the current industry needs of employers as well as to recognize each participant’s prior learning as they move along their journey of restarting their careers in Canada.

COWD has offered specialized training and career support to more than 5,000 internationally trained professionals since 2009 - which has led them to further professional studies and employment in their desired fields. The Engineering/Architecture Bridging Program further reinforces our commitment to harnessing the talent and skills of newcomers to Canada, contributing to the local economy.

If you know someone who could benefit from this program, spread the word and encourage them to explore this incredible opportunity. Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive engineering and architecture community in Canada!

The first cohort of the program begins on September 11, 2023. Applications are now being accepted on the program webpage.

Humber College is committed to reducing the volume of waste generated by 15 per cent per campus user by 2024. Several projects are underway to support this goal, including the Office Bin Reduction Project. Individual office waste bins will be removed from under desks in offices across the Humber North and University of Guelph-Humber campuses starting July 1

Staff and faculty are encouraged to utilize the many multi-stream waste bins present in the corridors outside of classrooms and offices.

By eliminating individual office bins, staff and faculty will help Humber eliminate approximately 30,000 plastic bags per year from going to landfill.

This initiative was successfully implemented at IGS and Lakeshore and has diverted thousands of unnecessary plastic bags from landfills.

Exceptions are available for those with accessibility needs.

If you have any questions about this initiative, or accessibility needs, please email sustainability@humber.ca
