This year’s admission campaign incorporates the theme of Destination Humber. The focus is to differentiate Humber from its competitors and create enthusiasm about Humber: the destination of choice. Once applicants apply to Humber, they receive an acknowledgment email, which is followed by a postcard that introduces them to this theme.

The Destination Humber theme is reinforced in the offer of admission letters, Welcome Package and subsequent electronic communications. Students who receive an offer of admission are directed to the Future Students page, which encourages them to confirm their offer of admission, post on social media and hear from current students about why Humber was their preferred destination. Check out the Welcome Video here:

Thank you for celebrating Open Education Week with the Centre for Teaching and Learning and Humber Libraries.

If you still have questions about what makes a resource open or how you can adopt, remix, or create OERs, we have good news for you. College libraries from across Ontario have collaborated to produce an OER Toolkit.

The OER Toolkit provides information to help faculty understand, engage with, and sustain OER in their work and practice.

Do you have ideas for using or adopting OER but are looking for collaborators? Here are some ways Humber Libraries can help you:

  • Collect and do initial vetting of supplementary materials
  • Use advanced search skills to find exactly what is needed
  • Give options for ways that students can access resources
  • Advise on how to make resources more accessible
  • Advise on issues of copyright and fair dealing
  • Advise on the use of Creative Commons licenses

If one of our students came to you asking for your help to make it through the year, and you knew buying them a latte or two would you help solve their problem, would you do it? Yes – without a doubt.

Like Alison Maclean, you can make a real difference to talented and hardworking Humber students by making a donation through payroll deduction to support Humber scholarships and awards.

The Humber Gives campaign runs until the end of March, however tomorrow is the last day that TD Insurance Meloche Monnex will match new gifts. Double your impact now through payroll deduction, monthly giving or a one-time gift.

See why Alison chooses to give by watching this year’s campaign video.

Should you have any questions on how to give, please contact Cynthia Luey, Annual Giving Officer, x4975 or cynthia.luey@humber.ca.

Recall from Tuesday’s post that Creative Commons licensing allows creators to grant others permission to use their media freely. Media can be illustrations, photos, videos, sounds and more – all of which have many purposes within education.

It can be difficult to determine if a video, song, or "googled" image has been posted with permission. Therefore, start with the following Creative Commons portals instead:

  • Wikimedia Commons – a collection of 45 million freely usable visual and audio media files to which anyone can contribute
  • Flickr Commons – hidden treasures from the world's public photography archives
  • ccMixter – music database that features sound effects and remixed music
  • reveal.js – open software that challenges the Office suite paradigm is hard to find.
  • Vimeo and YouTube – use the search filter settings to limit results to only Creative Commons videos.

Please note that it has come to our attention that all Humber T4s that were issued on February 23, 2018 are missing an important piece of information. Box 26 on the T4 forms that were generated do not display the correct amount for each employee’s actual CPP pensionable earnings (not related to CAAT Pension).

The Humber HR team is amending the original T4s to include the amounts for CPP pensionable earnings and the corrected file will be sent to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) by the end of this week. The corrected T4s will also be reprinted and hard copies will be mailed to all employees next week.

If you have already proceeded with filing your 2017 taxes using the T4 you received, please consult the following link for information as to how to refile your taxes:
