Dear Humber College Staff, Faculty and Students:

On behalf of the children, youth, and families served by the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto in the Etobicoke area, I would like to thank you all for participating in our annual Donations Program. Humber College has been partnering with the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto for more than 12 years and we truly appreciate your continued support in helping our vulnerable children. With each year word has spread across the growing Humber campuses and your annual donations keep getting larger. We thank you for that as each year the needs of our families become greater.

While the Donations Program runs year round at our organization to assist with a variety of situations, in the month of December alone, we have serviced approximately 650 children and youth and approximately 420 families. This is a significant increase from previous years and I believe it is a reflection of our economic times.

I was amazed at the creativity of each individual department who participated including ideas and donations such as: fundraising efforts for money; to the Humber team work backpacks; up to date clothing items; jewellery; educational toys; iPod Shuffles, stuffed animals; gift cards; and the list goes on. The variety of items provides many choices and opportunities for our parents, depending on their specific needs.

A special thank you to the staff at all “Drop Off” locations: Humber North and Lakeshore Residences, Gourmet Express, Seventh Semester, Marketing & Communications office and Lakeshore Principal’s office.

Wishing each of you and your families the very best for 2013!

Lori Gibbard, Coordinator of Volunteers

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (2005) Transportation Standard

Humber College continues to promote a barrier-free learning, working and living environment. Humber is required to comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA). The AODA outlines accessibility requirements to ensure that goods, services and facilities in Ontario are accessible to everyone. To date, the Ontario Government has released Accessibility Standards in four areas: Customer Service, Information and Communication, Employment and Transportation. Requirements within each Accessibility Standard will come into effect every year until 2021 and will support Humber in increasing accessibility to all its constituents.

Transportation Standard

The Transportation Standard is the fourth Accessibility Standard to be released by the Ontario Government. The Transportation Standard establishes requirements for transportation services to prevent and remove barriers so that people with disabilities can more easily access transportation services.

Humber's Responsibilities

Humber is not in the business of providing transportation services however there is a section of the legislation that directly applies to the college. If and when Humber provides transportation services and a request is made for an accessible vehicle or equivalent service, Humber must make that provision. For example, if transportation services have been arranged to transport students and employees from the Lakeshore Campus to the North Campus for a College event, such as a speaker series, and a person with a disability requires accessible transportation services, Humber must provide an accessible vehicle or equivalent service. Humber is also responsible for ensuring that the driver of the accessible vehicle has completed AODA Customer Service Standard training and has knowledge of supporting the transportation needs of persons with disabilities. The School of Transportation falls outside of the Transportation Standard because it is a training program and does not deliver transportation services.

What is an Accessible Vehicle?

An accessible vehicle encompasses a range of vehicles that have been modified to accommodate accessibility needs which may include:

  • A lower floor
  • Modified seating to allow for wheelchair or scooter access
  • Reconfigurable seating
  • A ramp, power life, or hoist

Should you require any assistance in meeting the accessible transportation requirements, contact Jessica Bowen, AODA Coordinator by email at jessica.bowen@humber.ca or by phone at 416.672.6622 x5685.
