New updates are available for two Library modules:

Academic Integrity Module: Launched in 2023, this self-paced module takes less than an hour to complete and introduces students to the values and practices of academic integrity, using scenarios, interactive activities, videos, and more.

We've now expanded this module to include a new fifth chapter, which introduces students to effective strategies for evaluating and verifying information from a generative AI tool. Additionally, the module now includes enhanced activities addressing appropriate uses of AI and citing sources for digital assignments.

AI, Algorithms & You: Launched in 2024, the AI, Algorithms & You module takes 60-90 minutes to complete and offers an introduction to algorithms and AI systems and considerations for their ethical and responsible use.

The module has now been updated with refreshed links to both internal and external resources.

Both modules can be imported into Blackboard and provide a certificate upon completion.

Faculty currently using either module in their Blackboard course sites are encouraged to download and import the latest version. For download links and instructions, please visit our instructor guides:

Additionally, the Library has launched a new Generative AI resource guide on using generative AI critically - which includes sections on citations (including a new video on citing generative AI in APA format), copyright, and definitions. We hope that this will be an anchoring resource on generative AI for the Humber community.

Dear Humber Community,

To honour Emma-Lee and her memory, we will be lowering the flags at Humber to half-mast on December 19 at 1 p.m. instead of December 20, as previously planned. This change is due to Humber Polytechnic closing on December 19 end of day. The gesture serves as a symbol of our respect for Emma-Lee and the impact she had on our Humber community during her time with us.

We recognize that grief is a difficult and personal experience. If you are an employee in need of support or are supporting someone who needs assistance, please reach out to someone close to you, your Manager or Associate Dean, or access the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) directly at 1.844.880.9142.

For learners seeking support, please reach out to Counselling services with Student Wellness and Equitable Learning by contacting swac@humber.ca. Alternatively, if at any time a learner needs immediate personal support or counseling, you can access the Good2Talk Helpline at 1.866.925.5454, or use Therapy Assist Online, which provides online tools.

Once again, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Emma-Lee.

Sincerely,

Ian Crookshank

Education and Training Solutions is proud to announce that as of November 2024, Humber Polytechnic supports and delivers the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) exams.

Formerly known as the General Education Development (GED) exam, CAEC supports adults in achieving the credential equivalent to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. This is an important resource for the greater Humber community; ensuring more people have access to post-secondary education.

There are five exams that make up this credential: Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science.

Exam registration takes place through TVO ILC:

https://www.ilc.org/pages/caec

CAEC exams are computer-based, in-person assessments. Exams are offered in English or French. They can be completed at any one of Humber’s three testing centres – North, Lakeshore and 30 Carrier Drive. We also work with partner institutions to support exam delivery outside of the Greater Toronto Area.

Thank you.

As we wrap up another incredible year, we want to take a moment to reflect on our achievements and express our gratitude to everyone who made it possible. This year, we designed, led and collaborated on many innovative projects and initiatives, each one providing valuable experiential learning opportunities for our students in creating a healthier future for all.

Innovative Student Projects

  • Health Innovation Challenge:  With funding support from Novo Nordisk Canada and in collaboration with the Longo Centre for Entrepreneurship (Longo CfE), this annual challenge brought together students from 16 different programs across 6 faculties to find innovative ways to engage youth on the prevention and management of Type 2 Diabetes.

  • Integrating Virtual Reality into Acute Brain Injury Programs: Funded through CEWIL, this project had Humber students working directly with the Scarborough Community Health Centre and clients.

  • Role of Technology in Aging and Dementia Care: This project engaged a total of 88 students from the Faculty of Social and Community Services (FSCS) and the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology (FAST) to explore the role of technology in aging and dementia care.

  • Splint Dexterity Project: In collaboration with Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation (BCTI), CIHW completed phase two of this project, that supported students in designing customized 3D splints for clients with dexterity limitations.

Applied Research in Action

  • Launch of United Way Funded research study 'Understanding the Effects of COVID-19 on the Mental Health of North Etobicoke Youth'.

  • Completion of the investigative phase of the research project in partnership with Klick Health on ‘Investigating the use of vocal biomarkers in prediabetes detection in South Asian Population’ with participation of over 200 students in the research study.

  • In the analysis stage of the research project on ‘Understanding the Impact of Unpaid Caregiving on Black Women’s Mental Health’, in collaboration with three community health partners.

  • Launch of ‘Making Services Better for Families – An ECE Needs Assessment Report’, which investigated the support needed by ECE workers in a post-covid world in collaboration with 11 community health partners.

As we look forward to the new year, we are excited about the opportunities ahead and remain dedicated to building brilliance through engagement, collaboration and innovation. Thank you for being a part of our journey. Wishing you and your loved ones a peaceful holiday season and a joyful New Year!

Warmest regards,
